HARRISBURG, Pa. - Former Pittsburgh Steelers star Lynn Swann has formed a campaign committee to raise money for a potential run for governor in 2006.
Swann named his committee Team 88, the number he wore as a wide receiver for the Steelers from 1974 to 1982, when the team won four Super Bowls.
"I will spend time introducing myself to communities across the commonwealth," the NFL Hall of Famer said in a statement Wednesday. "We will also explore the potential political and financial support for my candidacy."
Swann, who turns 53 next month, faces at least two prospective opponents in the GOP primary. The winner will take on incumbent Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell in November.
A Quinnipiac University poll of voters conducted earlier this month showed Rendell winning a hypothetical matchup against Swann, 50 to 34 percent.
Not ever a Steelers' fan, but I'll back Swanny over the corrupt, lying, degenerate, liberal-demokkkRAT dirtbag, Rendell, anytime. Q-polls are to be taken with less than a grain of sand.
Excellent!
The Philadelphia UNION thugs, and they are also RACISTS, don't want anyone except the Liberal Left Socialist that hand out money to them !!
Racist Democrats !!
I prefer to remember him as a former USC Trojan.
Isn't it interesting how all the polls lately have Republicans LOSING!! We Know what you're up to and it isn't going to work. It didn't work in 2004 and it is not going to work in '06 and '08. We aren't going to stop nominating qualified candidates that can win. If this is the best propaganda the MSM/Dems have at their disposal they are largely finished.
Other than his football prowess, the only thing I know about Lynn Swann is that he raises Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs. I saw a nice segment about him and his dogs on Animal Planet a while back. One of his dogs escaped the yard and was found miles away on a freeway ramp and turned in to the animal shelter. Eventually the dog was returned to the Swann family and Lynn made a very nice expression of gratitude from the whole family to the unknown rescuer.
Those are actually pretty good numbers for Swann since about the only thing any voter knows about him is that he's a former Steeler - and he's black.
This says that one out of three would vote for him knowing only that he's not Ed Rendell!
I believe Gary Cobb, a former NFL lnebacker, played at USC as well. Gary is a sports talk host on a Philly station and he supported Bush in the last election. Don't know if he is a registered Republican or not but I heard him take a lot of grief from some of the union thugs who called into his show.

Swann is a good dude. And he's one of the few "sideline" reporters that isn't over the top and annoying. Good luck to him.
If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.
One percentage point less for Rendell, and he'd be under fifty percent. Fast Eddie's got the advantage, but this is something we can build on.
Swanny is a good man!
Go Get 'Em , Swanny!
I can't wait to see how the MSM plays this one. Most of them are going to want Rendell to win.
This should be real interesting.
Absolutely, those are very good numbers considering he's just in an exploratory stage and very few voters have any concept of where he stands on the issues. The big numbers Rendell would normally run up in Pittsburgh would be cut way back because of Swann's heroics as a Steeler. You can bet this is one guy Rendell does not want to run against. I also believe fast Eddie has alienated some of the Philly suburban Republicans who voted for him last time because he was a name they recognized and they had mainly seen him in his role as a good-natured and knowledgable sports fan rather than as a corrupt politician.
Do it Swanny! I've been a Steeler fan my whole life and would vote for him in a minute if I still lived in Pa. When I saw him as a delegate to the RNC, I had even that more respect for him. Swanny doesn't embrace the "victimhood" philosophy. He realizes that anybody can make it in this great country if they put their mind to it.
This would be a dream come true for me, my favorite football player ever, a prominent member of my chosen political party, running for the top government job in my home state... I'm sorry I only get 1 (legitimate) vote!!
I wish him all the luck in the world and I hope he takes the governorship away from Rendell.
