Gift to the City — is it Art or for the Birds? "The Crackers" is as much a public happening as it is a tasty snack, defying the domino theory. Peanut butter or cheddar cheese. They poured their hearts and souls into the project for over 26 minutes. It required three dozen crackers and spanned over nearly 23 inches along a footbridge in the park at a cost (borne exclusively by the artists) of $2.50. Is it art? You decide. The installation was completed with no permits or bureaucracy, and fed to the ducks after about a half hour. "The Crackers" is entirely for profit,

It has a postmodern angst that I find compelling and repellant at the same time. Though one cannot deny its expressionist roots, it could hardly be called derivative except by the most hardcore neo-constructivists.

Now if only you could dance to it.

Now is the time on Shprockets when we crunch.

Here is my artwork combining the postmodern desire for visual stimulation with the angst caused by its ephemeral nature on the internet.

The emptiness of your art has left my soul bereft.

I think that what Art says is that it has become immune to parody. What Spinal Tap did for Rock and Roll, Christo et al have accomplished for visual Art. They have pointed out that it is now so empty of talent, content, or craftsmanship that good and bad have no meaning and mocking it is now damn near impossible.

Good catch and a terrific parody....the other "Art" exhibit is a grotesque squandering of money...have they no compassion for the homeless, etc. (no)... Anybody with info on any National Endowment for the Arts funding on the Gates idiocy?

Totally paid for by the artist through his own sources. He even put up the money to cover the extra security patrols used by the city. All he got from NYC was permission.

With fund-raising ability like that--and patrons like that--this is how we create a rising tide that lifts all boats, eh. At least it was private capital, more power to them in THAT regard....
