it turns out, spent all that time and nearly $150,000 of her family's money studying social sciences

150,000 dollars for a Social "science" degree. Where did she go? Even the most elite colleges are only around 25,000 a year. That equals six years for her degree. Maybe she can't find a job because she's an idiot.

Elite colleges now charge $40,000+ a year, with housing and meal plan.

I thought MIT was $25,000 a year a long time ago. Don't forget tuition doesn't include books or meals and so on and if the kid is studing certain things - the books are outrageous. My daughter-in-law had to pay $400.00 for a book for nursing.

25,000 for top schools? you are 10 years behind. don't forget to add room and board, and of course alcohol.

Not anymore. Some of the top-tier private schools are pushing $40K in tuition per year. $150K for an undergrad education at a private school is within the realm of reason if you consider $25K in tuition per year plus books, living expenses etc.

Sad to say but not true..... WPI is at nearly 40,000 a year including room and board and that's a

technical school, hardly "elite". Ivy League is more like 60k at this point...

Good point. It's possible that it's the student, and not the college, that is a waste of time.

The artcile said she was on the 6-year program: you know, register for 4.5 classes, drop the toughest one mid-semester, on the eve of the 'drop' deadline, drop another one, repeat for each semester, then have to attend classes one summer, in order to get your valuable degree in 6 years.

I couldn't wait to get out of college when I was there 1986-1990! I think most students want to stay these days!

The "elite colleges" you speak of, today, run more than $35K a year, and that's not all in. Colleges you never heard of run in the high 20s. Colleges and universities you have heard of--approaching $40K a year, with everything. Trust me, I have a sophomore at one of them.

My thoughts too. Or, totally unfocussed and lazy. Or maybe she's waiting for some one to come to her door and offer her that dream job, whatever it could be for
the "social sciences."

If she had to pay full price for her graduate degree, then it means she is a mental midget and the grad school did not think she was worth funding. Anyone with brains can get a fellowship for grad school.
