The friend of President Bush's who secretly recorded private conversations with him before his first bid for the White House says he will surrender the tapes and donate proceeds from a book based partly on them to charity.
"I was certainly wrong to tape the president without his permission," Doug Wead told The Washington Times yesterday. "I wish I could live my life over and do things differently."

Sure, the lefties on Err America are having fun, but they would make fun of anything Bush does. This is but a blip on the historical radar.
File this under 'DUHHHHHH!'
Oh man.
"Friends" don't secretly tape your phone calls and later release them to the media to peddle a book.
I agree. If he is truly remorseful and hands the tapes over I think it is time to let it go. Hopefully he will never make that mistake again.
I don't know about this guy, but the tapes sure backfired. All the lefties think it's a conspiracy because Bush comes off looking so good!
In the article, Wead says he began taping Bush with his permission as far back as 1988. He erroneously figured he could keep on doing it routinely with a recorder in his pocket since Bush didn't have a problem with it before. Obviously, he was wrong, and he's now doing the right thing.
Didn't Viacom demand to hear and verify the tapes and then Viacom released them?
True, but it doesn't change my impression of Mr. Wead. He obviously is sneaky and willing to take advantage of a friendship to advance himself. No thinking person will ever trust him again. He has had his fifteen minutes of fame. He just wanted it to last longer.
Defining hypocrisy:
Linda Tripp taped Monica and was villified by left. Friend tapes Bush and is lauded by the left.
Defining character:
Linda Tripp reveals Clinton. Friend reveals Bush.
Betrayal is betrayal.
I am not ready to cut him any slack. He had years to think about what he had done and come to that conclusion. I think this is a case of only wanting to do the right thing now because of other people's reactions. When it was only the book publishers (lefties?), he thought what he had done was just fine. Only after he got widespread criticism did he feel any remorse. Character is about doing what is right, regardless of other people's opinions.
Let him refuse all royalties for the sale of his book. Then we'll know he's properly contrite.
Well stated.
Pres. Bush in his restrained statements has shown his grandness. No nuts and sluts defense here as in the past presidency.
Looking forward to Dummie Funnies version of how he was intimidated by the evil Bush family.
No, but anyone involved with Amway might. Their whole culture seems to revolve around selling tapes to the chumps who join. And Wead is a big Amway guy.
I mean, how many of us are even set up to tape a phone call? That indicates a certain premeditation.
d.o.l.
Criminal Number 18F
And how do we know he's really remorseful, and not just CAUGHT?
Character is doing the right thing when nobody is looking; this guy got busted and now he's sorry.
Not buying it.
