"best person" according to whose criteria? That's the problem. A PacRim audience won't pay to see what an American audience might. The producers want to keep their jobs. They spend millions of other people's money. They need to find balance to hedge their bets. So they go for a latina instead of a black actress. That's show "business". Smith is right.
I haven't seen that one yet! I'll have to IMdB it.
It's good. Denzel Washington and a Ugandan girl. It's good stuff.
There is probably something to this. The studios do a lot of research as to what is palatableto the moviegoing public.
It's ok for a film to explore interracial issues, on balance, if that's what the film is about. If that issue is peripheral to the movie, the suits may decide that the casting is distracting.
As far as a black co-star, marketing info might suggest that the studio would cast a wider net by casting a black lead and a latin lead than if it were both black leads or both latino leads.
Smith is probably sincere and fairly accurate here.
Eva is an average competent replacement for a real Hollywood star.
She's gorgeous. I saw her on the cover of Town and Country recently. Wasn't Scarlett in American Pie?
I just checked it out--it looks interesting. The Indian aspect reminds me a little of "Bend It Like Beckham", which I thoroughly enjoyed. :-)
Scarlett is mainly famous for hanging out with other famous people and that indie 'Lost in Translation' Bill Murray movie, my guess is that she came cheap so they can afford to pay Cruise and the special effects budget.
I saw that movie on the plane home from England. It was great. I have the DVD and seen it about ten times already. It was weird how they made Keira Knightly the whole focus of ads in the US when the Indian girl was the focus of the movie. Anyway, she's playing a doctor on ER now.
i realize i'm being un pc,but is anyone else sick and tired of hearing black actors and actresses complain about discrimination/prejudice?
Lost in Translation was a good movie. My sister made me sit and watch it so I could hear all her stories about getting addicted to pachinko.
If you were a black person trying to get movie roles, you'd be complaining too. Trust me on that.
This may cause flames, but I think it's because Knightly's appearance "fits" what your typical American moviegoer generally expects and wants to see, much moreso than Parminder Nagra, anyway. They were both really good in "Bend It", but Nagra was what made the movie shine, IMNSHO.
His love interest was played by Rosario Dawson, an actress in the Eva Mendes category - Hispanic or Black Hispanic. I think he has a point here.
Sounds like you've got the pc line down pat.Are you a Michael Moore fan as well?
You rock, Cy! I didn't even know that the mag was out..great pics
Race Matters! - Because it is a cottage industry.

Why? It's real and they should be complaining. I would.
I've never heard Denzel, Angela Bassett or Morgan Freeman complain..its probably a generational thing
No I just know people in advertising and I also know many black aspiring actresses and models. My opinion is based in reality. You however resort to insults.
