Koizumi angry at two cops fleeing from club-wielding man

TOKYO Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said Tuesday he has told Japan's public security chief to review police training and preparedness after viewing a television news report about a man easily chasing off two police officers.
"I couldn't believe it when the police officers fled instead of trying to seize the suspect when he came at them," Koizumi said, referring to footage of an incident aired by Fuji Television Network on its morning news program.
According to the report and police, police officers who came to a scene where a car had run into a building in Tokyo's Daiba waterfront district fled when the driver approached them after wrecking the car's windows with a club.
The officers returned and arrested the driver when he tried to seize their police car, the police said.
Koizumi called the incident "embarrassing."
"Many people must have viewed the incident on TV," Koizumi said. "I told the National Public Safety Commission chief to take steps so police are trained and prepared."
The premier raised the issue during a cabinet meeting Tuesday morning, and National Public Safety Commission Chairman Yoshitaka Murata apologized and vowed to look into the case, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda said. (Kyodo News)
The footage, aired by a private broadcaster in Japan, shows two police officers approaching a car that had run into a building near Tokyo's waterfront.
The two officers ran from the driver after he smashed the windows of the car with a bat and then came after them.
The officers did return and grapple with the man after he jumped into their police car.
The man was arrested.

I saw that today and it was hillarious.
I saw the video. What a couple of wusses.
If that had happened to me when I pounded a beat, that goofball would have gotten a wood shampoo in very short order!
The Japanese cops are learning from the new training films for Los Angeles police response.
Batman Returns!!
and he's on the other side now......

See, they weren't scared. They knew the guy wanted a ride to the station so they waited until he got in their car. Sounds pretty smart to me.
Tooo many donuts?
Straight out of Monty Python!!
Reminds me of a Gozilla movie I once saw!
I was going to make much the same quip :)
When I saw your title, I thought you were talking about the head of the NAACP. I figured he was mad that the white cops didn't stay to get beaten to a pulp.
Pull that crap in Okinawa. They would open up on him Naha style. Then we would have a great video.
Batman's been slacken AND snacken.
Actually, he looks more like the StayPuff Marshmellowman now that I think about it.
Are you sure it isn't Bat Masterson?
bump for later
Better yet.
One of my favorite comedy "skits" was John Pinette doing Hervé Villechaize (Tattoo from Fantasy Island) as Batman.
You've got to be kidding me. That must've been hilarious.
