I sent a pretty scathing email to Doug Wead. To my surprise, he sent back an actual, personal, note. Here is the text of his message:
I was wrong to tape the president without his permission. wish I could live my life over and do things differently. Actually, I think the released tapes made him look good, that unlike other tape stories this was not about catching someone doing something wrong but catching someone doing something right. and the media just reacted knee jerk to the word "tapes."
Actually, started taping him in 1988 - with his permission - and still have those tapes. saw him as a future leader and was proud of him. and so it was natural to keep taping, even without his permission sense i never imagined they would more than source notes for history books. i just wanted to some day write about it all in an accurate way.
Anyway, this is what I am doing now, not sure what else I can do. Asking my attorney to direct any future proceeds from the book to charity and to find the best way to vet these tapes and get them back to the president to whom they belong. History can wait.
Doug Wead
I'm not telling anyone else what they should think or do. Just my opinion.
It does put him in a better light.
I concur.
It's a start.
Thanks for posting this. I think the guy is alright
I'm sorry....I for one, don't buy it.
Yes.
we all make mistacke.
My gut tells me that this guy does feel intense remorse.
Ping.
"Asking my attorney to direct any future proceeds from the book to charity and to find the best way to vet these tapes and get them back to the president to whom they belong."
That was the right thing to do.
Interesting. I would hope that when he says "find the best way to vet these tapes and get them back to the president to whom they belong" he hasn't missed the simple option of just giving all of them to the President. Also, I would be more impressed with his mea culpa if it weren't for the fact that he released the tapes in conjunction with publishing his book. His morality is in doubt, as are the sincerity of his apologies.
He didn't think the media was going to help he prez did he?
yeah, i went to bed with radio talk shows saying wead was evil, and i awakened to radio talk shows saying wead was evil.
maybe he got the message.
Well, directing that the proceeds of the book go to charity...would indeed indicate remorse.
Saying sorry, without penance isn't worth it's salt.
The dude is screwed and tatooed, forever. And, I don't believe him. He could've worked with the Whitehouse, but he went this route?? Even Junior Sample couldn't sell this junker.
Still in all, it was endearing of him to respond personally.. had he only given W the same chance.
Fair enough, Taggart, but some of his promises may eventually be verifiable, so we don't have to take his word for it.
So he made a mistake by taping GWB in confidential phone calls, made a mistake by failing to tell him all this time, and made a mistake by releasing the tapes. And now that he is feeling the heat, he admits he is fallible and it was all a big mistake.
Ooookay.
