High by historical figures, but not as high as the 14.7 percent in 1910 with the great immigration surge of the turn of the century. Back then the Irish bashing had given way to Italian and Polish bashing.

Yes, 12% isn't as high as the 14.7% of 1910, but isn't it amazing how the 14.7% were able to assimilate without mandating bi-lingual schools, bi-ligual government publications and translators in courts and hospitals?

However, the most important past is that the 14.7% percent entered this country LEGALY and didn't become a parasitic drain on our economy and infrastructure and denigrate our communities with multi family occupation of single family homes, instant barrios and butt ass ugly murals on every available wall on commercial buildings.

14.7% is paltry considering this Califoreignia news:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1328890/posts

"-The share of foreign-born in the state's population grew from 15 percent to 27 percent in the last 25 years, but will only grow to almost 30 percent - 29.8 percent - by 2030.

-The second generation grew from 12 percent of the state population in 1980 to 17 percent currently and will be almost 21 percent in 2030.

-The second generation is expected to account for the majority of growth in the state's work force by 2030. In the last 25 years, new immigrants made up about two-thirds of the work-force growth, but in the next 25 years they will provide only one-third of the growth. Instead, the second generation will constitute 59 percent of the growth."

The cultures were infinitely more similar and roughly at the same benchmark of "civilization".
