It amazes that 1:people think the weather is going to do the same thing at the same time year after year and
2: "worst on record!" is considered apocalyptic when we've only been keeping such records a bit over 100 years out of tens of thousands of years of weathers varying cycles
I think what drives it is that people find the idea that horrible disasters are "normal" in the grand scheme of things terrifying. Also there's a horror of the basic year-to-year randomness of them; there's a powerful pyschological desire for disasters to "mean" something.
