Riverside, N.J., Feb. 21, 2005 Sources say the 14-year-old boy having an affair with a teacher is cooperating with police, but is reluctant to divulge details for fear of getting her in more trouble. Action News has been told the boy is in love with the teacher, who is ten years older, and that the two even talked of marriage.
Gail Nottie/STORE OWNER: "I can't understand it, I can't see what a women would see in a child."
People are still in shock about the arrest Friday of a substitute teacher at Riverside High School for allegedly having an affair with a fourteen-year-old student.
Twenty-four-year-old Angela Stellwag, the daughter of Delran Mayor Joseph Stellwag, has been charged with sexual assault. Police say the two met in 2003 at Beverly City school when he was an eighth grader, and Stellwag was a substitute. Students there say there was lots of talk.
Mychalynn Bryant/STUDENT: "He would always stay after school with her and like people just started getting suspicious."
Gabrielle Hensley/Student: "One time I was at Sub Shack and I seen them up there, and they were making out in the car, and 'Wow'."
Efforts to contact Stellwag and her attorney were unsuccessful authorities have seized e-mails and love notes between the teacher and teen as evidence.
Attorney Mike Riley represent the boy and his family and says the fourteen-year-old is having a difficult time.
Mike Riley/VICTIM'S ATTORNEY: "The young man is not in a position where he has the legal capacity to give legal consent.... The shock of this relationship being exposed, the intense news interest in the relationship, the fact that he obviously has feelings for this young lady. It's a very distressing and disturbing situation he finds himself in."
At the deli down the street from Riverside High, people are shaking their heads.
Sal Notte/STORE OWNER: "Now whether she's guilty or not, I don't want to judge anybody, but it's just a horrible thing that happened."
And whatever you do, don't use apostrophes to shorten names. Some folks are sensitive!
That's because the "attaboy" types are middle-aged men who are all going through their own erectile dysfunction problems, and one of the few things that work for them is reminiscing about when erections were plentiful yet useless -- back when they were in class undressing some nubile eighth-grader with their eyes, or, even better, fantasizing about the fresh-from-college sorority slut with an education degree standing at the front of the classroom.
There. I said it.
I've wondered the same and here's a theory. For the past 30 years or more we've lived in a permissive society that's deemphasized personal responsibility and traditional values. At the same time the popular culture has virtully deified promiscuous and unconventional sexuality. I think many young men and women are addicted to the Pleasure Principle.
For those reasons some young people in the past couple of generations have no idea how to conduct themselves within the bonds of a conventional marital relationship. I believe some of these arrested-development young women simply don't know how to deal with grown-up men and are grasping for the kind of total control they can find in relationships with juvenile males. I could be wrong but it makes sense to me.
There are two things that can be done to resolve this sex scandal problem. GET RID OF THE UNIONS AND GET RID OF THE LIBERAL "DO IT IF IT FEELS GOOD" PROFESSORS AT THE UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES.
"The older woman thing" has been part of pop culture since The Graduate. Letourneau pre-dated the release of Pie, and years before Letourneau there was Pamela Smart, who is still in prison after being convicted of convincing her student-victim to kill her husband.
That is pretty bad. No, that is very bad.
It truly is, but think about the number of jokes that you hear in the course of a day about things that are not funny; it desensitizes people to the behavior. Listen to some of the Michael Jackson pedophilia jokes and ask yourself - is pedophilia really something to joke about or attempt to elicit laughter?
Something for people to ponder on concerning their reactions to these stories:
On Pavlov and conditioning -

While I didn't have any specific duration in mind, assume I was thinking of the people who participated in the Sixties' sex, drugs and rock & roll counter-culture (which I was). Then add either 25 or 33 years to '68 and that gets us to the present nicely in two generations.
No, no, no. It started way before that overrated crap-fest of a movie.
You keep contradicting yourself so much your argument is now beyond hope.
One thing that is apparent is that you think sexual promiscuity is okay - and all professional standards are also out the window if you think it is okay for teachers and students to be having sex. That's ridiculous on face.
