Wead: Unreleased Tapes a 'Betrayal'

Monday, Feb. 21, 2005 1:33 p.m. EST Wead: Unreleased Tapes a 'Betrayal'

Audiotapes released Sunday of President Bush speaking in a private, off-the-record conversation may not be as damaging as critics had hoped, with Bush winning raves in some cases for sounding the same in unguarded moments as he does in public.

But presidential historian and former first family friend Doug Wead, who secretly recorded Bush, is hinting that the full nine hours of audio he has could be a different matter.

Asked whether the president would view his release of the audio as an act of treachery from a trusted friend, Wead told the Washington Post on Monday, "It depends on what else is on the tapes." Then Wead implied that the unreleased material could be embarrassing, explaining, "Ninety percent of the tapes have not been heard. He can see that my motive was not to try to hurt him."

How could Bush see that, unless Wead was holding back damaging clips?

"If I released all the tapes, it would be an act of betrayal," the author told the Post, further indicating he has some explosive material.

But in the next breath Wead promised: "Most of them have never seen the light of day and never will."

That's not, however, what he told the New York Times for its front page story on Sunday, explaining that he wanted to release them when he died in order to leave the nation a unique record of Mr. Bush.

Other aspects of Wead's story are also raising concerns. He told the Times, for instance, that his motive in releasing some of his tapes had nothing to do with the fact that he has a new book to publicize.

However, the Post reports that Wead's publisher was deeply involved in making the tapes public.

"He said that he had never intended the tapes to become public, but that his publisher, Simon & Schuster, asked to hear them for libel reasons," reports the Post.

The Post continued, "He said after he played them for his editors, he was contacted by the Times and agreed to play portions for a reporter."

Why was the Times alerted? And why did Wead agree to help the paper if he never intended to make the tapes public?

At this point, there's only one logical answer: Mr. Wead's earlier plan to hide his tapes forever changed radically once his publisher began to see dollar signs.

I heard today that he was an Assembly of God pastor---

Not only did he betray a friend, but as a pastor, he betrayed his faith---

All I can say is, I think we need to pray harder for Bush when it comes to his "enemies close to home" almost more that the ones from overseas---

Why is this Wead guy only on CNN--did he sign a contract with them---do you know timewarner?

May be, but it's just plain wrong. I think a wise politician may also secretly record interviewers' off the record comments. I doubt they would be as mild as these supposed bombshells and I doubt we'd be all that surprised.

I'm just saying that's how his comments struck me when I read the WaPo this morning.

As to the appropriateness of NewsMax "reporting" what is really only speculation...it isn't good journalism. But I just went back and read their rationale for thinking that's what he's saying and I think they have a point. Actually, I rescind my "isn't good journalism", because in this article they juxtapose some of his contradictory statements plus his (imo) arch hints about the 90% that haven't been played.

Yes, I do think Weasel Wead is ginning up demand for the rest to be released.

we're all thinking that there's damaging stuff.

No, we're not "all" thinking there's damaging stuff.

Betcha that this "promise" will last a whole week, two at the most.
This guy is a backstabbing bottom-feeder.

Weads tapes could have been extremly damaging during two presidential campaigns. The fact that they didn't come out during either campaigns tells me that Wead wasn't seeking to harm the president.

The fact that most people would take umbrage that a "friend taped a friend" (remember how that goes?) and cause voter sympathy and that GWB is clearly the same in private as he is in public, the release during the campaigns would NOT have been damaging in the campaign.

The fact that Wead is lying--recorded only for historical purposes, was going turn them over to the Bush Archives one day, wait they were never meant to be public and nobody will ever hear most of them, and they end up in the New York Times and played on tv and radio, tells me he had a nefarious purpose, whether it be personal aggrandizement or to explicitly harm GWB.

He is not a good man (as Lynne Cheney might say).

"If I released all the tapes, it would be an act of betrayal," Wead said. "Most of them have never seen the light of day and never will."

and then the following:

Both Wead and the White House said Wead and Bush have not talked in several years. Asked whether he had recorded anyone else, Wead said, "I don't want to go there at all. I am hoping I can legally get rid of some of these." He said he made the tapes in Texas, where it is legal to record telephone conversations as long as one party is aware of it. Wead now lives in Haymarket, Va.

Nonetheless, Bush continued to call Wead from the road, Wead told The Post in 1999 and 2000. Wead said at the time that he was making notes of Bush's conversations, but did not mention to The Post that he was also taping them.

Some of the tapes may not be forth coming due to fact the the President was on the road campaigning and thus some of the calls may have originated in states where all parties must give consent for taping....

Eleanor Clift was interviewed on FOX and she tried to spin it that people would see that Bush actually had a plan that examined a lot of possibilities in his run for President and that would make people feel that actually having a thoughtful plan was distatseful.

That's funny. Bob Beckel was just on Fox saying the same thing.

Say, you don't think they had a plan...a talking points plan...do ya?

LOL

Wead has said he recorded only from states where secret recording is legal. I wonder how he can prove his claim?

I would think simple phone records.

I am not inclined to think he broke the law. But he broke trust and he is a Grade A jerk.

This might be a little attempted payback for Andy Card telling him to 'leave the adminstration sooner rather than later' back in 1990. reckon?

OOPSY---you do have a temper don't you?

I did note the thanks you proffered my on the other thread so --You are welcome---

Now, I told you, that you need to have a thick skin, didn't I? All I am trying to say to you is, that Newbies that start posting articles right off the bat, are scrutinized more than newbies that are around awhile just posting to other threads for a while---

Also, when a newbie posts two threads with the same subject in the title on the same day, I get a little wary of the motives, thats all---

Now, granted there are Freepers that "specialize" in posting threads on certain subjects, but they have been around a while, and freepers that read threads as well as start them, get to know their motivation for posting a topical thread--

I don't know you, haven't seen you post on other threads, so you could be Doug Wead, and are posting to get reaction from a conservative website, couldn't you? Or you could be a reporter or friend of him---

I don't mean to be mean, just kinda wary--OK?

It doesn't matter what is on the tapes. Murder, Rape, womanizing, cocaine, etc. All this has been exposed either on tape OR by FIRST HAND PERSONAL accounts concerning X42. The MSM didn't care then, and I am sure they don't care now!!

Isn't that the truth? The Old Media is so liberal and hypocritical, it drives me freakin' crazy sometimes. They spent 8+ years ignoring all of Clinton's crimes, including rape, and yet they'll splash something as insignificant as 5-year-old tapes across the headlines for weeks, especially if any more tapes are leaked.

Just in case any of you newbies missed it, and for all you oldies who have forgotten, I'm posting the clinton White House Task List. It's a list of the scandals that clinton was trying to keep a lid on, in outline form. This list was written by the clinton White House, not by FR or reporters or Congress. It's their list of scandals they perceived could be a problem and needed covering up. And this was from 1994 so it doesn't even include many of the scandals & crimes that occurred later on.

Listen I've been around here for almost a year.
I had other screen name, I didn't post anything just looking around, then I changed my screen name and email adress and I've been around with this name for a few days. And I've decided to post some things.
I hate this guy, who is playing this flip-flop game with these tapes.
I love my president and this country.

He told the Times, for instance, that his motive in releasing some of his tapes had nothing to do with the fact that he has a new book to publicize.

Yeah right. So in addition to being a treacherous weasel he's a lying sack of sh*t too. Figures.
