Taking its cues from the success of last year's Swift boat veterans' campaign in the presidential race, a conservative lobbying organization has hired some of the same consultants to orchestrate attacks on one of President Bush's toughest opponents in the battle to overhaul Social Security.
The lobbying group, USA Next, which has poured millions of dollars into Republican policy battles, now says it plans to spend as much as $10 million on commercials and other tactics assailing AARP, the powerhouse lobby opposing the private investment accounts at the center of Mr. Bush's plan.
''They are the boulder in the middle of the highway to personal savings accounts,'' said Charlie Jarvis, president of USA Next and former deputy under secretary of the interior in the Reagan and first Bush administrations. ''We will be the dynamite that removes them.''

Its about time someone took on this self appointed senior representative. They are all about power and making money and using seniors is just their gimmick to attain such
Better start with those Republican Senators raising questions...
I think some guy from USA Next was on O'Reilly last week.He made lots of sense.
If private accounts are so bad, why does AARP promote participation in funds that they themselves manage?
Perhaps, they fear that private accounts in Social Security might perform better than their funds...
BINGO! And do you think they even mention that these porposed accounts are VOLUNTARY like their funds? H*LL NO!
Seems as tho our heroes, the Swift Boat Vets for Truth will continue to serve our country.
Bless them all.
Breaking news from Mew York Times--Americans with point of view use MONEY to get their point of view to the masses! Scandal!
I know there are many freepers here who belong to the AARP. Can I ask you this question? How many of you got to vote on any position the AARP has taken on anything?
The AARP Takes the money and leaves you disenfranchised as to what they do with it.
yeah, but ya get that great 10% off on meals.
Isn't that worth selling your grandkid's future?
Hehe. It's going to take a hell of a lot more than $10 million to "remove" the AARP, pal. Arrogance is not a good way to start a war.
Automobile Club offers discounts at lots of places too, and they don't demand your grandkid's futures. You even get a valuable service for your money.
This story was upper right in the DMN this morning.
With the Swift Boat angle emphasized, of course.
Upper left was a story with the headline:
Bush trying to "MEND FENCES" in Europe.
If I hear that phrase one more time, I won't be responsible.
Duh. Bush does not need to "mend" fences. Europe does.
This is another of those "phrases" that the MSM gets from some dem talking point memo and you see it everywhere.
Now, Bush ... unlike most politicians ... could mend a fence if it needed mending but ...
Agreed. I have read only one or two stories about Dubya in europe. I'm sick to death of their constant 'reaching out' and 'mending fences' bull, I could spit.
Let's see: USA Next is a "conservative lobbying organization" but AARP is just a "powerhouse lobby".
Oh, I forgot. It's the NYTimes.
Yes, there is no liberal media bias.
Lots of folks seem to think so.
Bottom line: They are prostitutes. And cheap ones at that.
AAA gets you similar discounts. Local Chambers of Commerce put together senior discount programs as good or better. AARP gets you with their direct mail come-on when you hit 50 or so. Signing up is automatic then because you still have money coming in and AARP sounds pretty good. There is no member participation in arriving at the AARP position. The HQ group says what the position is and the stupid politicians accept it as fact. It is a lot like the NOW bunch but AARP can claim the membership which NOW cannot. The answer is to check out of AARP which I will do in the morning.
Well stated. AARP is a business.
