I think there's a Michael Douglas connection. He dumped Dowd for CZJ.

Sure. P.J. Gladnick says it best (channelling, and writing, from the perspective of Al Gore):

"What happened was that Dowd was writing some highly critical columns about the antics of Monica's boyfriend. Since these stories were appearing in the liberal New York Times, action had to be taken to neutralize Dowd. Therefore we called upon the services of Zeta-Jones' future hubby, Michael Douglas. He was instructed to slip the Salami to Dowd in order to get her to change the tone of her articles. It worked beautifully. Not long after Douglas jumped her love-starved buns, Dowd changed the target of her newspaper barbs from Clinton to Ken Starr. Of course, Douglas was bitching the whole time about how tough it was diddling the dowdy Dowd but we reminded him that the boffing was necessary to the interests of the Liberal cause. The moment Clinton beat the rap at the Senate Impeachment trial, Douglas withdrew his Chimichanga away from the hungry Dowd for good without even so much as a goodbye note. So even though Maureen Dowd is still under the illusion that Douglas dumped her for Zeta-Jones, the truth is that he was only carrying out an unpleasant assignment as part of Operation Diddle Dowd."

She's 50-something and alone. Posting Zeta-Jones to Dowd threads is rubbing it in.
