I believe he was suffering from depression through the 80s. This is a shame. Even as a flaming liberal he was still very funny. There will never be anyone like him again.

The man's own words hit the nail on the head (even though they did not refer to he, himself).

There's plenty of yapping on about his politics here. So what. He was a great literary entertainer. Many have laughed, cried, and thought over his words. Let it be at that. May he be at peace.

(Mr. Blonde, thanks for posting that quote. I wanted to post it myself, but couldn't quite remember what it was exactly. I'm glad you did for me.)
