He's on top of the world, with a lofty approval rating and more daily attention than he commanded even as a movie star.
After only two years could California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger walk away from his job?
Perhaps, say people on both sides of the political aisle. Whether Schwarzenegger is going to seek re-election -- a question that for almost any other first-term governor wouldn't merit a second thought -- has become the favorite parlor game in Sacramento.
``I have never felt that it was automatic,'' said Garry South, a Democratic consultant, who says that by now Schwarzenegger has realized what a thankless job he has taken on and must be tiring of it. ``I wouldn't bet on it.''
Coming from a onetime adviser to former Gov. Gray Davis, whom Schwarzenegger ousted in the 2003 recall, South's portrayal of Schwarzenegger as a dilettante could be dismissed as self-serving. But some Republicans also are wondering whether the governor might not run for a second term, simply because he has other things he could do.

On the other hand, Whalen said, the governor seems to be enjoying himself. ``People I talk to, nobody sees any signs of him wanting to pack it in.''
The California Republican Party, desperate to once again support the man who saved them from irrelevance, endorsed him at its recent convention, more than a year before the primary. Schwarzenegger accepted it -- but did not commit to run.
The governor says he is focused on the present, namely the ``year of reform'' he has promised to orchestrate changes featuring automatic budget cuts and merit pay for teachers. He also wants to end the state-managed pension system and take away the Legislature's power to draw political districts.

The 'year of reform'..
also the year of entrenchment of GReen Power in the form of the appointment of hard core leftists & environmentalists by the "conservative" Gubinor.
'and take away the Legislature's power to draw political districts.'
Sounds good. He may be a horrible governor in any other Republican state but he seems like he's the best thing they have in Sacremento. Ok, California can stay in the US until at least '06.
RINOld won't run in '06 and he'll leave one hell of a mess in his wake...
