"Compare Portland now to Portland in the early and mid 1990's."
That is a very sad comparison.
I hardly recognize the place now.
"...such a small town we don't show up on the scale! Works for me!"
*sigh* It would work for me, too.
I didn't think you were in OKC, but
thought you would be interested that
it had a place on this list.
A fairly dreary climate. That's the real reason George Eastman pulled the plug. That and being closed in by golf courses. Never understood the popularity of golf in that area.
I don't find Nashville stressful.
I'm 8 miles from an ever evolving downtown and am surrounded by about 1.5M in 5 counties.
But I find it very unstressful....extremely actually.
Manhattan was stressful.
Miami...horrible traffic.
I think traffic and violence would be the biggest contributors. Think Johannesburg or Rio.
I liked Portland...it seemed sleepy to me....maybe it's was the no sky cloudiness.
One of the reasons we moved here was because the town reminded us a little of Jackson when we were kids. I remind my adult kids when they get snotty about growing up in a small town (they're in Wichita & Tulsa now) that it was good enough to help get them where they are today. That usually shuts them up...lol!

Frankly, I don't find Portland stressful, either.
Maybe it's because I live in the country, and
never venture downtown. ;o)
I don't know when you were here, but things have
gone to hell in a handbasket since the mid 90's.
It was a wonderful city before the commies took
over.
Though I have never lived there, I spent a good six weeks in the area last year, working and playing.
I guess these people never noticed the beach.
"That usually shuts them up...lol!"
You're doing a good job as a parent. ;o)
Jackson was great when we were kids.
My parents thought nothing of letting
me drive over by myself to spend the
day. I know that I wouldn't be allowed
to do that now.
Lord....I haven't been to Portland since 1977 dear.
my perception is sort of dated isn't it?
we came down out of the Cascades and stayed in some hotel near the river for a couple of days and partied in a bar district near the river and had a blast...got cleaned up and headed to Yosemite.
LOL! It HAS changed a bit since
you were here last. ;o)
Were you staying near the Columbia,
or Willamette, River?
Yosemite is absoutely georgeous.
I've loved visiting there.
I can't recall. Back then I associated Portland with a song.
Operator by the Grateful Dead....sung by Pig Pen (RIP)
no foolin
"She could be hangin' 'round the steel mill,
Working in a house of blue lights.
Riding a getaway bus out of Portland, talking to the night.
I don't know where she's going, I don't care where she's been,
Long as she's doin' it right. Long as she's doin' it right."
the silliness of youth... I was 19 that summer
Amen.
Philly: 49th
I'm from Albany, NY (ranked 100th on this list). I now live in NYC (ranked 5th). Albany, or Smallbany as we call it, is pretty awful. I guess boring equals less stressful. I'll take the stress and NYC anyday.
I've lived in #2 Miami and #5 NYC, and currently live in #11, the hellhole that is Seattle. I NEVER found Miami to be very stressful aside from the traffic. It was actually a fairly relaxing place once you are away from the tourists traps. NYC goes without saying. Seattle has bad traffic, and people who are superficially freindly but deep down are douchebags.
Florida sux. If you do move there, go to the west coast where the friendly people are. SE Florida is filled with either obnoxious foreigners or rude as-holes from certain parts of Long Island and North Jersey, to say nothing of NYC. I did enjoy my three years in Miami, however.
Someone recommended Miami... when it gets truly impossible to tolerate Long Island, I'll leave. Maybe by then, it'll be tolerable :o)
Boca Raton and the other towns in the Palm Beach/Broward axis of evil are filled with many of New York's rudest. My parent's live in Boca so I know the area all too well. Try waiting in line at Too Jay's Delicatessen or the movie theatre, or shopping at Loehmann's or the Town Center Mall and you will see my point. Not a very friendly place. They're happy there, but I wouldn't recommend the place to good, friendly Middle American types.
