A closeup of horizontal layers of rock in Ethiopia's Kibish Formation, which yielded the oldest known fossils of the human species, Homo sapiens.

So, how old is that vertical thingy that goes through about 50 layers?

That’s not part of the rock, if you zoom in on the picture it looks like a machete lying against the rock for a scale comparison.
