Glendale police say suspect caused train crash for wife's attention

The man charged with killing 11 people on a commuter train by allegedly parking a truck in its path wasn't trying to commit suicide but wanted to create a "horrific tragedy," according to police.

Authorities initially said Juan Manuel Alvarez was planning to kill himself when he allegedly parked his truck on railroad tracks where it was struck by a Metrolink train carrying commuters to downtown Los Angeles on Jan. 26. It was believed he had lost his nerve and fled the truck before the train hit it and derailed.

"Although first impressions led us to believe Mr. Alvarez was attempting to commit suicide, the investigation has revealed that his actions are not consistent with that of an individual who is attempting to follow through with that act," Police Chief Randy Adams told reporters Thursday.

I searched(train, crash, glendale, etc), didn't find this one.

Turns out this idiot killed people for attention. That makes him even more deserving of a good sniff of Cyanide. Makes me wonder if the story he's giving now is cover for something else.

Despite his motivation, this is terrorism, even if domestic.

Has that ever been confirmed?

When we lived in Claremont in 2002 that train came right past our home. We loved to go down to the Depot for free jazz concerts on summer nights. Just makes me sick to think what that @$$HoLE did out there. My youngest son who is 20 was out there with us and we had thought of taking the train just for the fun of it. Never got around to it. Now when I think of that train all I can think of is the jerk who killed 11 people there.

CSPAN is talking about this right now. Saying the jerk didn't plan to kill himself, only to cause a horrific tragedy to get his wife's attention. Ann Coulter was the guest on CSPAN today. She was great. She kept reminding Liberal callers to have a point, a question. All they could do was call in and lob insults at her.

To a battle of wits, Liberals always come unarmed.

Yeah, this guy is pretty sick. Going about your normal business and this guy thinks he's important enough that killing others just doesn't matter. After all, he's in need of some sugar from his wife.

Pathetic, sick and twisted.

Defense attorney Eric Chase denounced the officials' remarks. "The statements of the Glendale police today are not only vicious and callous but are a reckless distortion of the facts," Chase said in a statement. "If they want to make this case about, as they say, Juan Alvarez's intent to cause a horrific tragedy, I hope they can back it up. Apparently the Glendale police have not seen enough blood and are hungry for more."

I wonder who is paying for this lawyer. Unless his lawyer has this taken this case for publicity - how can a 25 year old illegal pay for a high profile private defense attorney?

Many other posters and I earlier stated our general opinion that it might be hard to prosecute this man for murder, since it appeared this was a badly botched suicide attempt and no more. Well, that "more" is finally here. Time for the boys and girls at San Quentin to grease up the needle.

The case's lead detective, Lt. Jon Perkins, said police asked Alvarez what he thought would happen if a vehicle was left in the path of an oncoming train.

"He basically stated that he thought there would be an explosion," Perkins said.

Sometimes a man is so stupid it becomes criminal. Sometimes a man is so stipid, it becomes a captial crime.

Uncertain as far as I know. I am of the opinion that any loss of life and property as large as something like this deserves extreme scrutiny.

I am almost speechless. Almost.

Should it go without saying this POS should be shot out of a cannon into a brick wall?

That might be too fast. Booted out of an aircraft at 20,000 feet onto a rail yard might be more fitting. He'd see it coming for a long time.

While I'm dubious of MSM, I suspect that if he were not here legally, we'd have heard about it by now.

I assume exactly the opposite.
