Press conference over. John Scott on Fox notes it was 35 minutes.

There is something else going on here.

Negroponte is not known as a expert in Intel issues.......this appointment has me stumped as to its meaning.

Excellent choice. He turned the UN on it's ear. :)

CNN is in worry mode already...about the coming battle between Negroponte and Rumsfeld.

Hi, Dog. Negroponte will be more of a coordinator, methinks. Other than that, I don't know. He does have some intel experience, if you read his biography.

I was hoping for Woolsey.

Yes, me too. Woolsey, or General Franks.

He was Ambassador to the UN in the run-up to the war. Very competent. Gravitas.

Kicked ass at the UN re: the endless sniping at Israel by the Arab members.

I didn't know there was a "battle" between those two.

I believe Bush wanted to nominate someone who could be seen as a honest broker. Negroponte will need all his diplomatic skills to work with the various intelligence agencies and groups that comprise the intelligence bureaucracy. He may not be an intelligence expert, but he has been a user of intelligence for over 40 years. Moreover, his nominated deputy, General Hayden, can supply that expertise.

Arnaud de Borchave is giving great kudos to this selection..on Fox.

Bush said the press loves to create these things..(looming fights)

My opinion on the new Intelligence Head?..I am shocked and think, on reflection, it is a brilliant choice..The deputy is also being praised.

Yup. I'm interested in the kind of news that cues me in on the next person or institution I'm going to have to fire off an angry email to. These show trials are just for tittillation -- my life is not affected one iota either way they turn out, nor is anyone elses except the people directly involved. Even as much as I dislike Jacko, I still think it's a distasteful violation of his privacy to be discussing it all the time. Save it for E! and CourtTV.

He may be a competent guy in the foreign service (which, coming from me, is damning by faint praise), but National Intelligence Director? Yeah, I'm aware of the role of the FSOs and embassies in the intelligence business, but, IMHO, the last thing we need is a State Department mentality (37 years worth) at the helm of the National Intelligence Community.

Really, who as a child says "when I grow up, I want to join the foreign service."

%%%%%%

An awful lot of high school kids who vie to get into Georgetown's School of Foreign Service want to have a career there.

I have always been impressed with Negroponte. With his apparent intelligence and demeanor. What an excellent choice. Dubya is really on his game with his recent appointments. I cannot imagine a Democrat having the bench Bush has. It just wouldn't happen.
