"Really, who as a child says "when I grow up, I want to join the foreign service." "

In Mr. Negroponte's time (childhood) the foreign service was considered a "noble" profession.
It seems he has served his country well.
Wishing him the best.

Next question. Another female informs the President that Europe wants more cooperation from us re Iran.

GWB looks forward on his trip to discussing with Europeans on presenting one voice to Iran.

Wendel Goler: Refers to the Syria question and our recalling the ambassador. Goler wants to know if there's a specific charge but GWB says the investigation is ongoing so he is not prepared to say. Want international investigation? GWB: yes.

Next question: John Roberts asks if Iran builds nuclear weapon is GWB concerned Israel will attack?

GWB: They don't like Israel, to put it bluntly. Israel is concerned, as are we. Diplomatically settled preferable.

Next...GWB says "Let's see here. I have to make sure I go to the TV people...Nora"

Stepford Nora: How do you explain you would not be going back on our pledge to not raise taxes (I missed her preface of how he'd be raising them).

GWB: I understand nothing will happen if members of Congress don't agree there's a problem to be solved. And there is a problem. He expounds (SS).

Thanks for the information on Mr. Negroponte. I think he will be a real asset after hearing what you have to say.

Really, who as a child says "when I grow up, I want to join the foreign service."

I did. I am now a retired FSO and was not a marketing major. I have no regrets.

Question: Where will Negroponte's office be? (Good question, actually, being a new position) and will he give the daily intelligence briefings.

GWB: Doesn't know where office is. Not in the WH (reporter had asked if it would be). Will have access on daily basis and will be the primary briefer. In the morning he will be present in the office.

Vital relationship between this position and CIA Director.

I surfed and all network channels covering here.

I see the Clintonistas asked him to be Ambassador to the Phillipines and he accepted ... then he got out (or was kicked out) of Government after that stint in 1997...

I bet there is a good story there! (Maybe the US Military leaving the Phillipines issue).

GWB: Let's see, did I get to all the tv people yet?

Next: Greenspan question

Funny how what is controversial to one person is Bona Fides to another.

He is a tough guy. He is from the old school. Why do you think President Bush placed him in charge of Iraq before their election?

Hmmmmmmmm, I can't help but think he's jabbig these media types subtley due to the recent uproar over who is a "real journalist".

He just said "Let's see....John."

Then: If you didn't raise your hand does that mean you didn't have a question?

John: Not necessarily.

GWB: Cuz you didn't raise your hand.

John asks him to outline his vision on the Middle East. That oughta get America Blog whoever guy's panties in a twist. He won't like the "tone" as it wasn't adversarial enough.

He is a controversial figure because of his involvement in covert funding of the Contras

He's beginning to sound a like a good choice.

Oh, you...LOL

Everybody please check your local channels and see if networks are covering where you are. They are here.

He really just went on about the reporting that took place that made all seem so dire and awful when there were also good news stories that went unreported. I didn't transcribe but he really expounded about good news and progress. Going right to the American people if networks are covering.

Reporter stands up and asks if his premise is nuclear weapons is unacceptable how does that compare to other countries, including Iraq where it was unfounded.

GWB notes first that Iran is different than Iraq. Goes back to UN resolution.

Yes, it sounds as if he has good judgement as to what side to take.

To me he has always been very calm and serious, something needed right now with all the hysterical ranting.
