SACRAMENTO (AP) - Former state Senate leader John Burton has been appointed to the board of the California Tahoe Conservancy by the Senate committee he used to head.

Burton, a San Francisco Democrat, spent 26 years in the Legislature, serving as Senate president pro tem from 1998 until last November, when he was forced from office by term limits. He was also a member of Congress for eight years.

The conservancy, established in 1984, acquires property in the Lake Tahoe area to protect open space and wildlife habitat and to provide recreation.

The appointment was announced Wednesday by the Senate Rules Committee, which Burton chaired when he was Senate president pro tem.

Hundreds of boards and commissions are administered by an office of California's EDD, Employment Development Department (unemployment insurance), I bet. May as well be.

Membership on most boards and commissions is generally not available to the general public -- except for major donors -- it entitles unemployed political hacks up to six-figure unemployment payments per annum. You must report in at least twice a year.

Ah yes... The Great Cauleeforneeah Tarhoe CONswervancy, the predecessor to the even greater Sierra-Nevada CONservacancy, with it's little horde of lilliputian State Employees with their little badges and EXEMPT license plates and flashing blue lights and even SIRENS!!!

A whole cadre of militant little officious punk agressive bureaucratic agents of the State, complete with massive State Paychecks, HUGE 6 figure salaries and DEFINED BENEFIT PENSIONS from CalPERS and Low Copay luxurious HMO Health/Vision and Dental benefits (exceeded only by the typical MediCal benefits eagerly provided to large illegal alien families).

The time demands of this super secure employment are not too challenging and allow the luxury of "Politicing by Night" and "Implementing Policy by Day!" Bureacratic Policy Meetings by Day and Community Activist Meetings by Night plus happiness means never having to miss a City Hall or County Board of Supervisors meeting complete with organized cheering section participants for the current cause celeb!!!

Oh! Now THIS is what is meant by THE WORKER'S PARADISE!!!

Has this State always had this much corruption?

In a word, no. It used to be worse, and I ain't talkin' Willie Brown neither.

It was Jesse Unruh who coined the phrase, "Money is the mother's milk of politics," as well as that signature admonition, “If you can’t drink their booze, take their money, f*ck their women and then vote against ’em, you don’t belong in politics.”

Did I mention Southern Pacific land scams? Lake Owens?

Sounds like a prime opportunity to hoist a liberal former senator and his legislative bedfellows on their own petards.

This is carpetbagging. Send 'em packing.

John Burton...Phil Burton's revenge. I still remember Rude Phil telling a overflow crowd of loggers and their supporters at the Eureka Muni that there was going to be a Redwood National Park "so get used to it" and they are still stealing private land today.

Neither of whom are members of the CA legislature. Burton's appointment only highlights how corrupt the state legislature really is.
