La Russa Knew Canseco Was Taking Steriods: Cards Manager Makes Relevation on Wed. '60 Minutes'
MSNBC ^ | 2.16.05 | Evan Vucci

St. Louis Cardinals skipper Tony La Russa said he knew that slugger Jose Canseco was taking steroids when he was the Oakland A's manager in the late 1980s, and early 1990's, citing a 60 Minutes/CBS News interview to air tonight.

La Russa said in the interview that Canseco bragged openly about not having to work out to build muscle mass and strength.

'He would laugh about the time that the other guys were spending in the weight room and how he didn't have to..becuase he had another 'helper'..He would kid our players,' La Russa said. 'You know, it was a joke to him.'

La Russa told '60 Minutes' that he felt is wasn't worth it to report Canseco to the authorities.

La Russa, who managed Oakland to a World Series title with Canseco and Mark McGwire, says that he stands behind McGwire's denial that he never took steroids, telling the program that he got his gargantuan strength and size from weightlifting and a careful diet.

Canseco hit 462 home runs in a career that lasted from 1985-2001. A few years ago, he made the claim that 80 perecent of major leaguers were taking some from of steroids.

Looks like they are already going after McGwire.

This is an assinine statement. If you take steroids without working out, nothing much will happen, except the BAD things, like water retention, increased LDL, blood pressure, etc...

Maybe he didnt have to work out as hard as the other guys, but the myth that Steroids make you magically big is one that should die.

And how did "Big Mac" get the yellow, road-map skin, Tony?

This is probably what he meant. I mean, it's not like Canseco sat around eating Cheetos while everyone else worked out.

Why is everyone dumping on Canseco? At least he told the truth unlike all of the other "juicers". It's similar to the situation when the CIA stopped using bad guys as informants. Useful intelligence dried up because who would know better what criminal activity was going on bettter than "actual criminals". It's the same with juicers, junkies and dope fiends they all know where the dope is and who is using it.

Tony protests too much. Sure, Canseco is a selfish jerk, we have always known that. Most of us also knew that McGwire and many other ballplayers were roid freaks too before this latest brouhaha.

If I remember correctly Jose went from 185 pounds to 235 pounds in a matter of six months around 1986.

By the way, why is nobody talking about Ozzie Canseco (Jose's identical twin) as a benchmark for what Jose would have been without steroids? It's like being able to look at a clone. Ozzie Canseco career stats - 24 games, .200 BA, 0 HR, 4 RBI

Not dumping....but no respect whatsoever for his career in baseball along with the other CHEATERS.

Canseco was on WEEI's "The Big Show" yesterday, and from what I caught of the interview, this whole thing seems, to me, anyway, a big case of sour grapes. Canseco feels as though he was blackballed by MLB and that "white media members" purposefully destroyed his reputation because he was a successful Hispanic player.

Told the truth? He blames everyone else: McGwire, LaRussa, President Bush. Of course, blaming those three guys helps him sell books. We should praise him for trashing the president?
