A "geophysical exploration" caused a large blast Wednesday near the southern port city of Dailam in Iran, a local official in the Bushehr province said.
Oil exploration frequently takes place in the area, Iranian officials said. A reconnaissance team is en route to investigate, the official said.
There are no reports of casualties.
Initial reports from a Iranian state television included witnesses saying an airplane missile strike caused the blast. Later reports suggested a fuel tank falling from an airplane sparked the explosion. Officials said there is heavy air traffic in the area.
Russia has been building a nuclear plant in the city of Bushehr, about 90 miles southeast of Dailam.
Officials at the Russian Embassy in Tehran and at the Russian Ministry of Atomic Energy in Moscow -- which is overseeing the construction at the Bushehr nuclear plant -- told CNN in a phone interview there had been no explosion at the plant.
Ali Agha Mohammadi, the head of the security commission in Iran's National Security Council, earlier stated that a missile attack did not cause the explosion.

BS alert!!
They must have someone logged onto FreeRepublic and seeing how quickly their explanations are being debunked.
Does anyone even know what "Geophysical Exploration" Means...Whats next, a "Bioscientifical Adventure"??
Sounds like "Operation Confusion" is working just as expected. That IDF is GOOD!
Oookay...and what does Halliburton have to do with this?
Can you provide a direct link to the story? I get CNN homepage, can't seem to see the story. thanks.
It's just a joke. They are surveying for natural resources here and Halliburton does have some work still in Iran IIRC.
It's beginning to sound like an a-bomb. Or as one of our posters suggested, more likely a fuel-air bomb. I think we'd know if they'd detonated an a-bomb.
It means they are building uranium enrichment facilities, missile launch bunkers, and housing bunkers, UNDERGROUND.
Are they saying this was an underground blast???????
If so......could there be a little testing taking place(with regards to them being in the process of building a nuke)?
Not to worry...the mullahs are just doing a little explosive prospecting for nuclear weapons. The koran says nuclear weapons are buried in the mountains of southern Iran.
Makes me wonder if this isn't a "failed" nuke detonation, underground. That would touch off the HE without creating a critical mass, and would result in huge explosion, with no casualties.
Interesting idea but.....With a blast big enough to cause this amount to stir?
Hmmm, sounds to me like their nuclear reactor is sitting on some unstable land.
