No doubt a great team. I recall them ALL well as a Ranger Fan, and nothing was better than watching them go toe-to-toe. I'd even watch the Flyers' channel because of announcer Gene Hart....But the Flyers were always known for their great heart. Remember the scoring schneid Propp couldn't seem to shake off during the playoffs?
"I recall that in two of their wins they came from two goals down -- a couple classics at the Spectrum (JJ Daigneault!) ...
"Back then, being a Flyer meant something ...
Anyhow, that 7th game they got up a goal in the first couple minutes (Murray Craven?) and had a 2 man PP but failed to convert.
Anderson's clincher might not have been a backhander: I never saw the replay -- just ran up to my room and sulked. ;)
Man, I don't blame ya :-( Yeah, they took the Oilers right down to the wire. Every time you thought the Flyers were done, they arose like Lazaras. I DO recall that Glenn Anderson goal (btw, another Ranger-to-be -- incl. Messier, Gretsky, Lowe, Tikkinen etal). TOUGH way to lose that series.
It seemed to me the Flyers squandered some excellent seasons because they inexplicably went flat come playoff time...
But my favorite Flyers teams (loved to HATE them ;-) were the Big Bad Bullies, Clarke-Dupont-Schulz-Dailey-Kelly-Saleski-MacLeish teams.
I will NEVER forget the game Ranger Dale Rolfe became Dave Schulz' personal punching bag.
Think you're right...
They ALL lit it up like a pinball machine....Aaah, McKenzie and Stanfield....And Derek Jeter was supposedly named after Derek Sanderson. Those were the days...
You look at those names from that Oiler 82-83 season and stats and wonder how the competion even got close -- even the "lesser" guys like Huddy, Hunter, Kenny Rat Linseman, Boschman...
I will NEVER forget the game Ranger Dale Rolfe became Dave Schulz' personal punching bag.
That WAS a great rivalry with the Rangers. Do they even play each other anymore?!
I remember Shultz pummeling Rolfe. Did he ever play again after that?
The talent the team had from 73-76 is often overlooked because of the rough stuff, but those guys could play -- even Schultz scored 20 back when that meant something (though I guess it does again!). And Bernie was amazing. There are a lot of reasons they haven't won since, but the biggest is that they haven't had a goalie anywhere near that great since. Esche makes a couple easy saves in the 7th Game against Tampa and we go on to beat Calgary.
They gave up almost 4 goals a game, even with Grant Fuhr and Andy Moog! Ah, those were the days ...
BTW, the 25th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice is Tuesday (22nd) ...!
Ooooh ... how I'd love to line up one of those Moonbats for what would nowadays be called a "charge" ... worth the two minutes and I'd even throw in an elbow!
Wow. A 10-7 game today is a defensive battle in the NFL!
LOL. I hear ya.
I remember an early '80's game -- mighta involved Washington -- with a 14-10 final. That's a little excessive!
Neely had made a cameo appearance as the character Seabass in the Jim Carrey film "Dumb and Dumber," and Lemieux would chase him around the ice and try to get under his skin by yelling: "Hey, which one are you -- Dumb or Dumber?"
LOL.
Lemieux was the proverbial guy you DESPISE unless he's on your team. They used to call him "The Grate One".
