The "Average" person in the US does not have access to Johns Hopkins, the Mayo Cliic or MD Anderson. These are some of the best hospitals in the US and they only accept certain insurance programs and you still have to pay a very high price.
The bottom line is you get what you pay for in India and the US.

The doctor who saved me was educated at the Medical School in Tehran and now he is chief of his department at a major medical school and regarded as the best neurologist in the world.

Democracy does have a moderating influence on a state which is always a good thing. However, a government press(ing) for Islamic law to be incorporated in the new constitution. may not be good for the US.
In the Old Days the CIA would have gone in deposed Saddam and installed a puppet. It may not have been pretty but it would keep the peace in the region.
