In the UK, the people have the rights that are granted to them by the state; in the US, the people have all the rights they haven't ceded to the state. That is a profound difference, and it affects the way people think about politics.
Do the British still commonly refer to themselves as subjects rather than citizens? I've always found the term subject somewhat disturbing.

Do the British still commonly refer to themselves as subjects rather than citizens? Well this Brit hasn't heard the term British Subject for years. Also, my passport refers to British Citizens and British Nationals

Officially we are citizens but in the presence of the Monarchy it is common to be referred to as a subject. Cannot say that happens evry often though.
