Press Release from Superintendent of Mock Wedding High School
Victor Valley Union High School District | February 15, 2005 | Self

Posted on 02/15/2005 12:22:41 PM PST by Eagle of Liberty

PRESS RELEASE - 10 February, 2005

The Victor Valley Union High School District wishes to respond to parents’ concerns regarding the Gay-Straight Alliance’s same-sex “mock wedding” ceremony scheduled for Friday, February 11, 2005, at Silverado High School.

Please be advised that this ceremony is neither pursuant to, nor a part of, the District’s Board-approved curriculum for students. The ceremony is, however, a lawful exercise of the right of free speech guaranteed to public school students under state and federal law.

Specifically, a California Court of Appeal has held that the Education Code provides students a right of free speech that exceeds the right available to the general public under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

The federal Equal Access Act, enacted by the United States Congress in 1984, requires that student clubs be permitted to meet and conduct their activities on high school campuses without regard to any viewpoint espoused by the club. Additionally, the United States Supreme Court has held that public officials are prohibited from censoring speech before it is expressed. Prohibiting an event based on the real or anticipated objections of members of the community also has been held unlawful by the United States Supreme Court.

The District will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of all its students and staff.

Greg Lundeen

Superintendent

Subjecting your child to Public Schools for their educuation when you have the means and ability not to is nothing short of Child Abuse.

Just curious - If 4H wants to hold a mock wedding between members and sheep, would the school permit this under free speech?

Curious... Would making fun of the ceremony and the freaks who are mocking the institution of marriage with perversion be protected under free speech...?

Free Speech.........what am I missing here.

What does this have to do with reading writing and arithmetic, with a little geography and history thrown in for good measure.

Every kid has to get a valentine in grade school. Remember having to write one to every kid in the class? That's about the only affirmative action I agree with. This valentine for everyone practice has prevailed. It probably paved the way for affirmative action. (semi-sarcasm)

I went to public school, and actually liked it, so don't lump ALL public schools into one liberal group.
