This week's JAMA has an article about Dr. Daley, who wants to develop oocytes from stem cells and then the ability to make cloned embryos and embryonic stem cells for each transplant recipient.
It is a fiction that any of these cells will be "normal." Just think, the oocytes from aborted baby girls, induced to grow in tissue culture and the cloned embryos produced by them, induced to grow by electrical and chemical stimulants and telomerase fudging, stripped of their outer covering and then, just the right cells are grown in just the right environment and media in order to grow only the tissues that are desired. I don't think this sounds like a way to obtain normal, long-lived tissues at all.
What Dr. Daley ought to be doing is research on the chemical signals that cause the in situ stem cells to develop into the tissues we want. These techniques can be discovered by using animal models, umbilical, bone marrow, and other non-killing techniques with adult stem cells, and even with the current embryonic stem cell lines that were killed under the Clinton Administration's fiction that government money could be used to develop the products of killed humans, but not for killing those humans.
Forget "First, do no harm." This is create new ways to make people and then kill them for their parts.
We are each more than the sum of our parts and I can prove it: just reduce any of us to our parts, and we will be dead. Just as any of our children who are created in a petri dish are made dead by mining them for their parts.
