Sensenbrenner Drivers License Bill to Help Combat Illegal Immigration
GOPUSA ^

Posted on 02/15/2005 7:11:28 AM PST by Happy2BMe

House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) has introduced the REAL ID act on the floor of the House. The REAL ID act contains four main provisions:

-- An applicant for a driver’s license must prove lawful presence in the United States. States may still issue the license if such proof is not produced but must stamp it in such a way as to show permission to legally be in the United States was not presented. Such a stamped license cannot be used for any federal purpose such as boarding a commercial flight.

-- Asylum laws are tightened so that terrorists may not enter the country and move around freely as an asylum applicant.

-- A 3.5 mile stretch of fence near San Diego that has been stopped by environmentalists is completed.

-- The present law that doesn’t allow an alien already in the United States to be deported because of affiliation with terrorist groups is changed.

We the undersigned believe the REAL ID act is a step on the road to controlling illegal immigration in the United States by controlling the identification of our citizens. We petition all members of the United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President George W. Bush to enact this bill into law forthwith.

Sincerly

Terrorists SHOULD BE CAUGHT AT THE BORDER, not in the middle of a shopping mall, trying to pass a check!!! Send that to the Congress!!!

So what has changed. We have an illegal with a drivers liscense basically marked (illegal). I doubt many are going to be taking any flights anyways. If they come in to get their liscense and they are proven to be illegal load em up and deport em. They are violating our law. I am confused as to what laws in this country are in effect. Perhaps that will be my legal defense if I do something wrong.

I will sign the petition.

I have a certified copy of my birth certificate and a certified copy of my marriage license which documents my name change. They have served me well through the years for "proving" my identity. They are what I have produced without any challenge or question. If any National ID is required, give it to immigrants

Note to Congress: use what we have. Penalize the states for granting rights to individuals when those individuals are here illegally. You may be doing this for the "right" reasons, but think of the long term picture.

Case in point: our SSN. We were always told it was not an acceptable form of ID. (Dating myself here) Now it is "Don't leave home without it."

I look "American" i.e. I am a WASP. No one is going to stop me for being here illegally, unless it is out of boredom. But Pedro, who is here not only legally but a natural born citizen may one day be afraid to walk the dog without his ID.

Sure, he could prove his citizenship, but only after a royal hassle. And then think of the fun the ACLU will have on this one. Profiling.

In addition to DUI checks, insurance checks, seatbelt check, we will have innigation checks. One more instance where We, the People, are burdened with the idea that we "might" be breaking the law.

This problem did not come to life because there was no National ID system. This problem lays at the feet of our governmental agencies who refused to enforce the laws we have. It should not be up to us to pay the price for their screw ups.

In Wisconsin the news media is saying that if the President signs the bill, airports will no longer accept ANY WI drivers license as ID, because WI is one of 10 states that license illegals. This says any "stamped" ID. I wonder which it is? And what they will do in the interim (no license is "stamped" right now).

I am all for this law, and Wisconsin is trying to enact a law that would no longer allow illegals to get drivers licenses, but our wonderful Gov.(D) is saying he will veto it, along with any attempt to show ID for voting.

Yes, you are right -- and Washington is deliberately avoiding doing anything MEANINGFUL about it. This is a tragedy upon our country, our system of laws, the significance of citizenship, our security, and a real afront those US immigrants who have worked hard to immigrate THE LEGAL WAY. Frankly, I am getting tired of the politics-before-country attitude of Washington...

I don't like this part. Governor Bill Richardson has already allowed illegals to get driver's licenses in NM. THAT could invite ALL illegals to enter through NM, so they could get a license. Could this Legislation stop him from doing that? He's an arrogant POS, and I don't trust him.

This bill is by far the best we've had from anyone, and for that I'm thankful, but concerned about what it might do to our state.

Illegal Mexican workers are already being bussed (yes - by the busload) as far away as Florida to North Carolina to get a valid driver's license.

Thanks for the link. I like what I see of him have a feeling he has a future. If this reflects his character and is consistent with his other acts as a Congressman, he will have my support in a heartbeat.

I say that because I am only familiar with him on this issue. But I have not heard his constituents complaining--he must be the real deal.

PC can go straight to hell in a handbasket. It is time someone stopped worrying about offending anyone and put the concerns of citizens on the front burner. Tancredo has been doing just that.

My how times have changed. 30 years ago we moved to South Carolina after our wedding. I was a few months shy of 21. I had my GA license, wedding certificate, and was good to go.

Well, imagine my shock when I learned I could not get a license until my husband (over 21) SIGNED A PERMISSION FORM!!! I was appalled to have to ask my husband to give me permission to drive. But I wanted to drive and did what I had to do.

So until he could get some time off, I drove legally with a GA license without his "permission."

Oh great, from now on they can just cross at Juarez and come into NM for their driver's licenses. This legislation won't stop them from coming into the country illegally. It will encourage them to come into NM to get their license. What is Sensenbrenner thinking to put that provision into this bill?

It's already headed for the Senate, isn't it?
I guess some folks have problems with the potential biometrics (facial recognition) scanning. I don't know where that is in the bill...

If anyone has info on that, perhaps they could share it here. Other then that, this bill seems to be pretty good, imo.

===========================================

What is our government thinking by not closing the borders and allowing over $420 BILLION in tax revenue to be lost each year as result of employers paying illegal Mexican labor under the table?
