Here's a question I need answered. Is there such a thing as a hangfire? If I shoot a firearm and it doesn't go off, should I remain still until the round goes of, or just move onto the next cartridge?

You might check your owner's manual,or talk to the Range Safety Officer at your range. Generally, you should keep that firearm pointed downrange for at least 30 seconds (preferably a minute) before clearing that round.

Yep, as castle05 said, wait a bit, then clear the round. Leave the gun pointed downrange for an interval (a minute is good advice), and then get the offender out of the gun. Some guns are a lot easier to quickly and safely dump a dud out of than others!
I get hangfires with rimfires once in a blue moon, but haven't had a factory centerfire hang for years.
