By now youve all heard about the Ward Churchill flap at the University of Colorado. You might have found yourselves wondering how a conservative in the Colorado public university system would be treated if he made controversial statements.
Well, wonder no more. Back in 1997 Luis Chavez, a history professor at Pikes Peak Community College, satirized the proliferation of ethnic studies programs by submitting a mock proposal for a "Gringo American Studies" program. He was suspended.
But wait, theres more! Chavez appealed the decision, and it was overturned, but when his department chair, Katherine Sturdevant, testified on his behalf at the appeals hearing, "the administration stripped her of her chairmanship of the history department, took away her office on the colleges new campus, reassigned her to the older campus, removed her from various college committees, denied her merit raises, and gave her a negative evaluation after twelve years of positive performance reviews."
Professor Sturdevant decided to take legal action, and, four years later, a federal court ordered that she be reinstated, and that the college award her $75,000 and a raise.
'Academic Freedom'... that is an oxymoron...
Our great universities -- now staffed in big part by '60s refugees -- have become affirmative action programs for liberal ideas, nothing more.
Wart Cheapthrill should be fired because he's a plagiarist, poseur, and brings disgrace to the school by acting like a fool.
Add that he is a pretender, too.
"Gringo American Studies"
I like it! Now in California Gringos are a minority-less than 50%, what goes around come around. Time to preserve that old Gringo history and jump on that affirmative action gravy train....
Wonder how many colleges would be inviting him/her to speak at their venues?
The intellectual dishonesty at these so called institutions of higher learning is pathetic.
CU fire Churchill.Quit wasting my tax paying money.
"Wart Cheapthrill...LOL!!!
These people remind me of the communist governments that encourage the "flowering of ideas." Then, when people speak up, they get thrown into prison. I congratulate Katherine Sturdevant for taking a principled stand. And I am glad she ultimately prevailed. Of course, we are all aware of her, since she has become a household name. In a spirited defense of Academic Freedom didn't dozens and dozens of Universities file friend of the court briefs on her behalf? (smirk)
Churchill is now going to Wisconsin to speak and waste some of their tax dollars to protect his sorry butt. Wake Up Cheeseheads?
And I, for one, and hubby for two, plan on being there to protest. Anybody else?
I only wish B'ORE would have asked the african american dean if he would feel the same way if the professor was going to discuss the virtues of slavery and lynching.
This is pretty much what I said on another thread. If we take away academic freedom, the radicals would have very little to worry about, but the few remaining Christians and conservatives will take it in the neck.
It's hard to see what can be done about the increasing left-wing tilt on college campuses unless boards of trustees, administrators, and legislatures start to exert pressure from above. And at the moment many legislatures are only too happy to have radicals in charge of their state colleges.
The lunatics are in charge of the asylum. Taking our institutions back again is bound to be a very long and difficult process. In some cases it may mean starting new institutions and letting the old ones rot away, because they are unfixable.
