Be forewarned this could be a hoax. The West Mesa has been the site of numerous college pranks. For example - the west mesa is the home to three extinct volcano cones. One year students at UNM put a bunch of used car tires in one of them and lit it off. Had the city spooked as they thought the volcano had become active!
