"Never existed" or they came to the realization that they would never be found and there was a convienient way to close the case?

In an attempt to erase images of Bill Richardson sucking his thumb on national television just in time for a presidential run? (This was on his watch, wasn't it?)

Richardson doesn't have any "real" authority over Los Alamos NATIONAL Labs anymore ... Merely the Governor of the state it is in.

Other than maybe ordering the NM State Police or NM National Guard to take over the place (and President Bush and Samuel W. Bodman, the current SoE, might have a thing or two to say about that) he can't do anything more than make a nuisance of himself there.

Conceivably, Arnie has more power at LANL than Richardson has... since he is the governor of the State University (University of California) that has Management authority over the place.

What they are saying is that the paperwork didn't match the facts on the ground. Which is equally disturbing. How do you know if documents are missing if your records can't be trusted? Keeping proper records is Security 101.

This reminds me of a story I've told here before, but it seems relevant. When I was working as a Hawk Missile Acquisition Radar Repairman at McGregor Base, north of Fort Dix, where Hawk and Nike missiles were fired to train their crews in case they had to be used against an air attack on the continental USA, somebody in our unit discovered a discrepancy.

Apparently there was a Nike 2 antiaircraft missile with no accompanying paperwork. Whoever was confronted with this problem decided that the only thing to do was to take the missile out into the desert and bury it. Then the missiles would exactly match the paperwork. So, that's what was done. End of problem. As far as I know, it's still out there somewhere under the sand and the horny toads.
