AIDS Report Brings Alarm, Not Surprise
New York Times ^ | February 13, 2005 | RICHARD PÉREZ-PEÑA and MARC SANTORA

As word spread of a rare and potentially more aggressive form of H.I.V., first reported publicly in New York on Friday, communities already hit hard by the disease, professionals who combat it, and people who are infected reacted yesterday with fear and skepticism. But few were surprised, given that the sense of urgency about the disease has waned.

Michael Justiniano, 37, who lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn, said he watched his father die of AIDS in 1993. "I have spoken to young kids, sometimes here, who say, 'If I get it, it's no big deal. I can just take a pill,' " he said. "I'm like, 'Are you stupid?' It is so disgusting. I find it really disturbing."

City health officials announced on Friday that they had detected the rare strain of H.I.V. in one man whose case they described as particularly worrisome because it merged two unusual features: resistance to nearly all anti-retroviral drugs used to treat the infection, and stunningly swift progression from infection to full-fledged AIDS.

That combination, the officials said, could signal a new, more menacing kind of infection, and its discovery set in motion an anxious search by city workers to find the man's sexual partners and have them tested.

No surprise that AIDS is spreading so quickly.

God has a way of showing who's still in charge, doesn't he?

"The infected man, gay and in his 40's, tested negative for H.I.V. in May 2003, then tested positive last December, health officials said. Investigators believe he may have contracted the virus in October when he engaged in unprotected anal sex with multiple partners while using crystal methamphetamine."

And if that number of partners is in the hundreds, and if those hundreds had unprotected anal sex with other hundres, there is one HELL of a problem now, isn't there?

He engaged in gay unprotected sex and drug use, and now the taxpayers get to support the LEGAL drugs he will be taking, pushed by the drug companies. The world isn't fair.

Drug resistant and fast acting. This new AIDS is so insidious it could only be the work of Dick Cheney and Halliburton.

If it wasn't so expensive, and if the costs of this problem were not being off-loaded onto people who are not reckless risk takers, I'd say that there was little problem in stupid people shortening their life expectancy. But as the virus and the behavioral problem mutate (in the the days chronicled in "And The Band Played On" - promiscuity's upper bound was probably 3-4 anonymous partners a night, now with meth and Viagra it is 10-20) this is a terribly expensive problem.

If the Attorneys General of numerous states can sue tobacco companies for the healthcare costs carried by the taxpayer for smoking related deaths...

One small, but significant difference here as compared to "normal" AIDS cases, is that this case won't last too long.

Maybe this is what it takes, in the eyes of our Creator, to teach people INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBLITY. Will man EVER become responsible enough to realize he has control, and the responsiblity, for his fate?

I've wondered along the same lines. Gays who are infected with HIV have used the internet to join orgies with other gays and expose them to HIV also. Why hasn't the Government targeted this activity, since it occurs over "wires" and is clearly dangerous to the public health? Of course, I know why, as it is another area where the Government suddenly goes blind, like the lack of "racial profiling" at airports.

AIDS was a CLEAR warning - the new strain is the tsunami.

Why all the rush to find the guy's sex partners? If this strain works that fast they'll be dead before anyone is found.

That will, at least, slow down the spread of the disease.

No surprise that AIDS is spreading so quickly. ... Oliver Palan, 19, a gay student at Baruch College, said that he had slept with 10 men recently,

and ....(the person infected) may have contracted the virus in October when he engaged in unprotected anal sex with multiple partners while using crystal methamphetamine

Nope, nothing to see here. AIDS is spread by lack of funding.

At least the article mentioned how people catch it, rather than portraying AIDS as some bolt from the blue. I guess I should take my victories where I find them.

This preventable disease is like a plague. Nothing will stop it. I have now come to the conclusion that many homosexuals do not want this disease stopped.

As the scriptures say, they have been given over to depraved minds. It is very sad.

I think we are speaking of 1 to 3 months, and with a rapid onset of serious illness which will probably cool down even the gayest of blades, eh?!

It was only a matter of time until this happened.

It's happened.

Bye-bye AIDS carriers!

Not really.
They can all go to Boston, get married, and have free medicaid to pay for their disease.
This is, afterall, the real reason behind gay marriage.

It's fine with me if they all go to Boston. But if they have the new strain, I would advise the landlords not to expect to get paid if they sign long leases.

they'll probably complain that the month to month leases are too expensive.
