CA: Governor calls GOP to 'great battle' ('ToTal ReFoRm')
Sac Bee ^ | 2/11/05 | Gary Delsohn

Characterizing his agenda this year as a "great battle" against "evil," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger used a 28-minute speech at the state Republican convention Friday night to rally fellow party members around his plans to fight Democratic interests at the ballot box.

Vowing to pass four broad government-overhaul measures at a special election later this year, Schwarzenegger said public employee labor unions and other foes are amassing $200 million to fight him.

--snip--

"That's why they fixed a little here, a little there. But now we're going to the source. We're going right there where all the evil is, and we're going to fix this problem once and for all."

Belittling his Democratic adversaries in the Legislature for not responding to his proposals because they must be on "sleeping pills ... or medication," Schwarzenegger suggested they've all but blown their chance to join him.

"They can go ahead and do whatever they want," he bellowed in a line that drew loud applause from the 1,000 Republicans at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Sacramento. "The train has left the station.

"The train has left the station and there (are) three things they can do. One is they can join and then jump on the train. Number two, they can go and stand behind and just wave and be left behind. Or number three, they get in front of the train - and you know what happens then."

When the raucous applause and laughter died down, Schwarzenegger did what he always seems to do while delivering a fiery speech deriding the Democrats: He said how much he wants to work with them.

"It is my preference to go and work with the legislators," he said. "This is my number one preference. Work together like with some of the issues we did last year."

Gov. Calls Democrats 'Addicts'

http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/california/la-me-arnold12feb12,1,5028199.story?coll=la-headlines-pe-california

They just can't stop spending, he says

Robert Salladay, Los Angeles Times

In a fiery speech to Republican faithful Friday evening, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger ridiculed Democrats as wasteful spending "addicts" who have been taking "sleeping pills," and he characterized California's problems as stemming from "evil." The speech before about 1,000 people at a convention of the California Republican Party — a traditionally conservative crowd of stalwarts — featured Schwarzenegger's sharpest rhetoric to date as he prepared for a possible special election in November that would shake up state government.

He's trying.. he sure didn't help himself with some of his rookie year moves,, But we must remember who the real enemies are in this state. Looks like a massive ballot awaits us in the fall.

The RINOcification of the GOP issue still needs to be addressed at some point, however.

You know, at this point I couldn't care less who is addressing the issue of government-out-of-control, the GOP, RINOs, Dems, Libertarians, or Martains, for that matter. It's perhaps the biggest issue of our time, and whoever fights the good fight against this out-of-control juggernaut gets my support, party labels be damned.

I kind of figure Arnold really thought he could work with the dims his first year. He is acting now as if he's learned they will not work with him.

I don't know much about Bruce Mcphearson (sp?) but I am assuming he's rather moderate since an article I read said the dims would probably approve him.

Time is drawing near to get more involved for this fall!

We need reform all right, but what Arnold is offering in many respects is its direct antithesis.

He is sounding more conservative.

Look back to the recall campaign or his appearance at the RNC. Schwarzenegger plays to the audience in broad generalities he can twist later.

Don't belive a word of it. Examine every detail.

Gotta Love Arnold. He kicks ass and takes names. I'll say it once, and say it again, don't mess with this man.

The issue is going to become VASTLY more complicated with the rise of the Left in the Democratic Party. Democrats who have very little in common with the traditional Republican party are defecting to the GOP based solely on social issues and values. They will not be fiscal conservatives, and will have many differing ideas; think of it as immigration to the GOP. They want a better party, so they come here - but they are bringing some old Democrat ideals with them.

Do we intergrate at all? If so, how? Or will we simply encourage them to form a new party?

As opposed to an alternative candidate who knew better.

It's been an incredibly expensive lesson.

...Schwarzenegger has said many times that he doesn't want to simply balance the state budget. He wants to overhaul public employee pension programs, introduce merit pay for teachers, change the way legislative districts are drawn and impose a spending control measure that would force across-the-board cuts if he and lawmakers can't agree on a budget.

Democrats, who have said their top priority is to balance the budget that is supposed to take effect July 1, have said they will give Schwarzenegger's proposals a fair hearing but doubt there's very much support on their side of the aisle for any of them.

Schwarzenegger told the enthusiastic audience that labor unions representing teachers and other public employees are falsely claiming he's imposing draconian budget cuts in an attempt to weaken his standing with the public so he'll be forced to back down.

"They know that my approval rating is in the 60s," he said. "The legislators' (are) in the 30s ... and you will see all those TV ads and those radio ads and those newspaper ads just to try to bring my poll numbers down.

Where is your boy Tom? I heard/read nothing but (crickets) coming from his policy operation. If he was a real leader he would be out there talking to the troops, on TV, at the conventions, etc.

Please give us examples where Arnold has kicked ass. Looks to me like the only time he wins is when he borrows more money.

The alternative candidate tried to hand the election to Bustamonte. He's no friend of conservatives.

That is also true, There is a potential power grab in the works here , the likes of which we haven't seen on these shores in years.

The massive pension funds and turning their control over to out of state agents , ie wall street, is worthy of a very serious look or two or three.

Not every piece of the proposals as they sit today is necessarily the best thing now or in the future, regardless of who is proposing it.

The voters patience and intellect will be severely tested as the ballot will be huge and the issues very complex.

He is, by webmail and on radio talk shows. As for TV, pray tell, when are the "big tent" RINO/GOP or the media going to allow that?

I understand what you are saying , but we must be vigilant of the proposed changes and be very diligent in questioning any and all the motives of said change agents, nomatter who they may be.

Partisanship can trip up rational thought everytime, just look at the dems and their refusal to even look at social security and reform..
