The "Governor" in Wolfe's "I am Charlotte Simmons" is you-know-who!

News Flash to all Freepers reading Tom Wolfe’s “I am Charlotte Simmons”: I can personally attest that the story of the “Governor of California” represented in the book, who receives oral sex from a college undergrad coed, is based on a true story.

The true governor was the Governor of Arkansas, and the year was 1988 (yes, him!).

The event was not a Commencement, with the governor-as-commencement-speaker, as represented in the book: in reality, it was at Washington and Lee University’s quadrennial “Mock Convention”: it was a mock Democratic Convention, and Clinton was here as a speaker.

It occurred not in “the Grove”, as represented in the book, but at “the Pavillion”, a.k.a. “Zollman’s Pavillion”, as any W&L alum knows -- for outsider’s it’s a sort of “Love Shack” open air club, out in the country at the end of a dirt road, with a small river running behind it.

It’s a music club, and Clinton brought his sax, and was on the hunt for coeds, and the oral sex part of the story is true. The story has been re-told here since it happened -- long before Monica or Paula or the Anerican Spectator story -- and the W&L story is definitely true.

Tom Wolfe is a graduate of W&L, and spends a lot of time here on campus. The heavy fraternity emphasis, the Lacrosse players -- these are all the W&L 'layers' of the story, to compliment the Yale/Harvard/Duke/Princeton layers.

Clinton was, as always, accompanied by bodyguards, like in the book, although the fight between bodyguard and student is Wolfe’s invention.

Interesting theory. Do you have any material to back it up?

It's not news, though.

At this point, no revelation-regarding Sir Slickenstein-would surprise me.

Then again, I would appreciate a little more confirmation of this allegation.

NOTHING TOO GRAPHIC, PLEASE!

And in other news, the sun rose in the eastern sky this morning, the pope is still Catholic, and it's generally colder the further away from the equater you travel.

Proof: I arrived at W&L in early 1994. I first head the story then -- 10 years ago -- and the story had at that time been around in continuous circulation since 1988, when it happened.

I'm sure that Wolfe has known about the story for years as well.

If we can keep this thread alive, perhaps someone from W&L who was closer to the events at hand will come forward with stronger corroboration.

So you're saying -- yes, it had to be Clinton -- but did you KNOW that it was not just modelled on the way Clinton behaves generally, but an actual TRUE story?

That is not personal knowledge. None of us think it is out of the scope of Slick Willy behavior, but it is still school folklore.

It is absolutely no surprise. When Drudge first revealed Monica he described her as indulging clinton's sex preference. Everyone knew what that meant.

It's irritating (I say in general, not to this thread in particular) when people talk about Monica like she was some kind of aberration instead of one in a cast of hundreds.

Bill Clinton:

I (DID) have sex with these women.

1. Debbie Mathis

2. Geniffer Flowers

3. Dolly Kyl Browning

4. Most of the desperate female population, stretching from Little Rock to Northern Rockland County.

"I arrived at W&L in early 1994. I first head the story then "

Story. Sounds like a nice urban myth, as much as we'd like to see it be true. If you have some other evidence, I'd sure like to see it.

Actually what I'm saying is I don't have to watch the eastern sky in the morning to know that the sun will rise there and I damned sure don't have to care who all gave oral satisfaction to x42 or how many times or where or when to know it happened.

In other words, it is obvious that BJ Clinton has some unnatural appeal to certain females and it is not at all surprising or news that he got his lollipop licked and why are we still talking about this vomit inducing loser 5 years after he was of any consequence to America.
