When I was in school (dark ages) we had a strict dress code, there was NO talking and the teachers had absolute control over the class. It didn't kill us either. My point was that my girlfriend's son always heard about socializing in school. He thought he'd go and visit freely during class, in the halls, lunch room, whatever. It didn't kill him, but he sure was shocked!

See, your friend's son had no clue about what it was like so I imagine he was SHOCKED. :) Can't blame him I suppose if he didn't know. Yes, dark ages for us too. Silence, no chewing gum, no talking in class, had to raise our hand but it was nice and quiet in class and not chaos. It all serves towards teaching kids how to accept responsibility, obedience, the art of listening and respect for the person around you not to mention the Teacher.
