It is difficult for those fortunate enough to live in more sophisticated communities to understand and appreciate the deep sense of fear, outrage and humiliation that marks these annual incursions into the little streets of this little town..." Irish News -- July 5th 1986 editorial
The Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition is an umbrella group set up by the residents of the Catholic/Nationalist Garvaghy Road area of the town of Portadown. The area has now achieved worldwide notoriety for its annual round of loyalist and Orange Order parades and counter-demonstrations, and for the violence which accompanies them. For many years, the community has been under constant siege by the Orange Order and its supporters. The residents continue to stand strong and struggle for their right to equality, freedom from sectarian discrimination and harassment.

I'm actually on your side. I want the violence to end and everyone to be protected equally by the law. I think it is time for the International Community to put pressure on the British government to enforce the Good Firday agreement.
What's extreme about that?
Northern Ireland is that skeleton in the UK closet.
Of course there are other reasons, all interrelated, and the gay bishop is merely the tip of the iceberg. To give you the Reader's Digest Condensed Version, the Episcopal Church U.S.A. has simply decided to reject Scripture, Tradition, and Reason as well as the authority of the Anglican Communion in favor of being politically trendy and "up to date". The notorious bishop is merely one example of what happens when a church deserts all these things to "do its own thing". They might as well be Unitarian-Universalists (do you HAVE those in Ireland?)
The British AND Irish governments are trying to enforce the GFA, for crying out loud.
It's the racketeering paramilitaries that are constantly standing in the way.
Yeah, we have them over here. We call them college students though! *L*
Damn right! Or their confession that they killed Jean McConville (mother of 10) but refusal to acknowledge last month that it was a crime!!! I remember their hysterical howling about how they didn't kill Gerry McCabe - a decent human being. Of course, they murdered him in cold blood and then threatened the witnesses so that their charge was reduced to manslaughter
And how their all-out attack now about their murdering, knee capping's and robberies are nothing to do with them. Every one of these vermin shinners were on the radio today bleating on about how it is THEY who are the victims, and of course, RTE allowed them all the latitude they needed for their little propaganda coup.
These SCUMBAGS know no shame, but it is those neanderthals who vote for them, and swallow their bullshit - they deserve the hottest place in hell.
Apart from that. I've had a pretty good night.
Not to mention that small little matter of the other 'Missing'!!!
Ha! I had a great night too...I should just turn off the computer this late at night! *L*
And, btw, have you ever heard such shite like that which Gerry Adams and wee bollix Martin McGuinness have been spouting about the bank raid?
If I was Bertie and Gerry Adams said 'arrest me', I'd take that as an invitation to intern him!
I'm not one of those who pretends to even have a clue about what's going on over there, especially these days. I did so some research on the "Irish Question" and the Irish situation from the early 1900's to around the 1930's back in my college days (although it was for my own edification and not for class) but I'm sorry to say I've forgotten most of it. I did know about it at one time, though, really I did!
I saw a really good movie a couple of years ago that's supposedly based on a real person. Our local video store at the time doesn't have much, but I like Julie Walters and I found this movie with Julie Walters and Ciaran Hinds, where she's this mom who becomes an activist when her friend gets shot dead in the street, and the IRA sorta-kinda almost-but-not-quite apologizes for it. And Ciaran Hinds plays her husband and has bad stomach ulcers or something like that.
Julie Walters is a terrific actress, although I'm not sure about the movie you are talking about.
She's currently starring in a musical version of Acorn Antiques on the West End. I bet it's hilarious. With Victoria Wood as the script writer, it has to be. :-)
Same as that. I'm off to the north of Finland tomorrow (of all places) but I'll be loggin from there. Night deary!
Finland, wow..that's one place I've never visited. Give Helsinki my regards! ;-)
...and don't call me dreary! *LOL* (kidding)
Yeah, they send me there from time to time. It's a place 2 hours flight north of Helsinki. Lookin' forward to a nice hotel for a week (and no kids to look after - ha!)
Brownie is outdoing himself with the wronged victim routine. As if those Sinn Fein denials are worth a toss!
Other things the IRA has categorically denied:
Bombing Birmingham
Bombing Claudy
Bombing Eniskillen
'Disappearing' People
Targeting civilians
Florida gunrunning
Sellling drugs
Shooting drug dealers
Killing Garda McCabe
Killing Jean McConville
Knowing the Columbia Three
Abducting Bobby Tohill
Robbing Makro
Any relationship with Sinn Fein
And that's just the list of stuff we can put a name on..
...add to that countless punishment beatings, kneecappings, extortion rackets...
Don't let Mrs. Colosis hear you say that.
You have a safe trip, and enjoy! (BTW, when they ask you to go clubbing in Finland, several baby seals may die! *L*)
Don't bother trying to talk sense to this ignorant wanker Happygal, he's the type that knows far more about the situation in Ireland and Northern Ireland than the ignoramuses who actually live there! He's not worth the adrenaline.
Not to be too simplistic about it, but don't you think the Catholics have at least some legitimate grievance? I'm certainly not defending the kneecappers, but the history of Protestant occupation in Northern Ireland isn't without its own brand of brutality.

FOUND IT! I knew I wasn't dreaming. The name of the film is Titanic Town, but it doesn't say if it's based on a true story or not. I'm thinking now that it's not. I'm always careful when watching a film like this to see if they have an "angle", and it looked pretty balanced; at least it wasn't severely biased one way or another. Great job, as always, by Julie Walters.
