The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the Presidents guest worker amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.
The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The managements answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.
Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.
Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bushs immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the Presidents Oath of Office.
I need a ping list...something that until this thread I have lived without.
The bablefish translation of that is:
ARTICULATE TWO -- Being necessary a ordered affluent military service for the security of a Free State, will not be violated the right of the town to have and to carry arms.
Viva Amexica!
*************
Wasn't Ross Perot more of a "spoiler"? I am afraid that Hillary is likely to get a very large share of the votes.
In my (humble) opinion, Condi Rice is the only possible candidate that can beat her.
Hey wardaddy if you get a ping list put me on it.
Does "demographic" actually mean race though? I thought it was a somewhat more vague word --- demos -- meaning "people". The USA is the most racially mixed country in the world --- so regretting the loss of traditional USA culture and democraphics doesn't automatically make one a racist. Just like those celebrating the hispanics moving into the top minority position are often extremely anti-black, those pushing for La Raza take-over of the USA are not non-racists. Some see the blacks now being in the third position as good because they lose their power --- and just because it's another "race' they're cheering on for their own purposes, it doesn't mean they aren't the worst kind of racists.
That's exactly right. The reason Vicente Fox and his cohorts are pushing their guest worker plan is that they very much fear being overthrown --- not just a political party but the entire corrupt Mexican government will be overthrown without 2 million Mexicans leaving every year.
There is no more hope in Mexico. For the time being our leaders in the USA are allowing the Mexican leaders to dictate the terms of our immigration policies to help them stay in power as long as possible because as bad as they are they are seen as some kind of stability.
But the massive exodus of people out is actually making everything worse in Mexico.
I see the workers exodus [and their money sent home] as a safety valve, but essentially, we agree.
-- Mexico is ripe for revolution, and our government is playing games at our border in an attempt to delay the inevitable.
It was actually a guy from the Philipines who first got me appreciating the "anglo" culture we inherited from the British. He said the best thing for his country was American rule over it --- that they were backward before, suffered greatly under hispanic rule and benefitted under American rule. He claimed the very best thing is to be a former British colony --- gave examples --- India, Hong Kong, Canada, Austratlia, the USA --- all places that gained something very valuable from British influences. Then he mentioned the Philipines, Puerto Rico as examples that the American values which are descended from British values that have benefitted. In fact as he pointed out --- it's generally terrible to be a former colony --- almost all former colonies are in terrible shape --- except for the British colonies and a few American influenced places.
Put me on that ping list too.
If a bunch of liberal white Catholics move to a conservative white Catholic area and cause the area to go rat, that's certainly a demographic change IMO.
A guy from India here was bragging the other day how India is the biggest English speaking country in the world. He said it with great pride and I have to admit I felt a twinge of jealousy that he could boast that while the USA is trying to wipe out the importance of English.
"No illegal immigration"?? Of course not -- U.S. immigration authorities enforced it's laws and procedure back then. I'm surprised you could be this ignorant about the history of immigration for an "immigration lawyer," Luicito. Good thing you barely have to lift a finger these days to get a client citizenship these days...
Who came through Ellis Island during its heyday as an immigration depot and what happened to them during their stay?:
First and second class ship passengers never set foot on Ellis Island. They were inspected and interrogated in the privacy of their ship cabins and landed in Manhattan. All others traveling third class or steerage were required to be processed on Ellis.
The first officials that immigrants encountered face-to-face on the island were federal physicians in search of newcomers with contagious diseases, mental abnormalities, or physical deformities that might limit newcomers' abilities to support themselves. Those whom inspectors wanted to examine further were detained and chalked with a code letter to indicate the reason for the holdover--"K" for hernia, "L" for lung, "E" for eye, "H" for heart, "X" for mental disorder.
After completing the medical examination, immigrants were assembled in the Great Hall. Immigration Bureau officers called newcomers' names from the manifests of the ships on which they arrived. The immigration officer verified names and asked numerous questions concerning marital status, occupation, nationality, final destination, and the sum of money that the immigrant carried. Those with insufficient funds or a relative to sustain them while they hunted for a job might be detained or even rejected.
Only one in six newcomers was detained on Ellis Island. One group that encountered special difficulty was young single women arriving unescorted. With few occupations open to women, officials feared that young women would either fall destitute and become wards of the state or, worse yet, suffer a moral fall and turn to prostitution. Therefore women were not permitted to leave the island unescorted. Others detained were those awaiting funds from relatives so they could support themselves and reach their final destinations. Copious dormitories housed those detained for medical, mental/emotional, financial, or other reasons while they awaited hearings before boards of review. Those denied entry by such boards had a final appeal to Washington.
Most newcomers spent only a few hours on Ellis Island before receiving cards stamped "admitted" and taking ferry passage to Manhattan or a barge to the railroad piers of New Jersey for the next leg of their journey. They could exchange their money for American currency and purchase train tickets before departing the island. Two-thirds of those admitted bought train tickets for places other than New York City. Although there were seventy other immigration depots in this era, 90 percent of all arrivals between 1892 and 1924 were processed on Ellis. Today, over 100 million Americans can trace their heritage through someone who was processed on Ellis Island.
The story of Ellis Island has often been romanticized in novels and the electronic media. Newcomers were either the helpless huddled masses herded hither and yon by indifferent or even sinister bureaucrats, or brave souls who withstood the efforts of those who would gouge them of their money, change their names on registry lists in a spirit of nativism or cruel humor, or worse yet, reject them at the gates for frivolous reasons.
The case files and records of investigations into Ellis Island procedures included on these reels of microfilm offer a multidimensional portrait of day-to-day doings at America's flagship immigration depot. There were periodic episodes of bribe-taking and other corrupt practices on Ellis revealed in investigations. However, when charges were lodged, Congress investigated. Most federal authorities on Ellis such as commissioners William Williams and Robert Watchorn strove to be vigilant, knowing Washington and other governments were keeping Ellis Island under close scrutiny. Those seeking to take advantage of the newcomers were usually caught and punished. Equal vigilance appears to have been required of officials to see that immigrants desperate to enter the United States at all costs did not circumvent American laws and admissions procedures.

The demographic shifts we see now are the former hispanic types --- those SW USA hispanic types, added to later by those fleeing the Mexican Revolution --- the old Conservatives of Mexico with the type from the southern states of Mexico or from the slums of Mexico City --- not rancheros, not hard workers. Ciudad Juarez itself complains of this type of demographic shift going on there --- not long ago it was a quiet desert town --- but in a couple decades all sorts of people moved in with no roots in the north. People cut off from their southern villages and families, extremely poor people unaccustomed to northern desert life -- the extreme heat and cold. That is also a demographic change --- not a healthy one.
Huh, someone who has been complaining and being paranoid about a non-existant posse, wants to start one of his own.
Can anybody say hypocrite.
What amazes me is how some people are totally ignorant about previous immigration waves. One-third the immigrants from Europe returned home in a short time --- there were no social services, no government handouts, no WIC, no food stamps for the losers. Even though that trip was very long and difficult --- back then those who couldn't make it here had no safety net and went home.
No, that's what seemed to impress YOU, Luis.
It was my pride over my "ancestor's patriotism and ability to help defend the Republic from fascism while your ancestors were...I suppose somewhere in Cuba in the sugar cane fields.
Don't worry. You sure won't be on it.
More likely, you and your ilk will be the target.
They both wanted hits to their site - and certainly got them.
More likely, you and your ilk will be the target
The hypocrite issues a threat, I'm quaking in my boots.(/sarcasm)
