Great googly moogly! Will someone get hold of Governor Ehrlich and let him know that Steffen wasn't "spreading rumors"? NCPAC sent one or two private messages to someone (possible WaPost/DUmbocrat operative) commenting on the rumors and how Montgomery county executive Doug Duncan might use them in the DUmbocrat primary for governor and the compost got their slimy hands on it. WBAL radio interview with Ehrlich from this morning is available (if you don't have broadband beware: 5 minutes in high bit rate, long download)

The investigation will never spead to Washington Posts's complicity in this matter, imo. Have to protect the liberal press, you know, and just go after conservatives.

The good news is that if this is the best O'Malley can do to slime Ehrlich, the 2006 is over, and Ehrlich wins.

A caller into WBAL the other day was suggesting that this rumor started with the Duncan campaign. Might be interesting to see what they dig up if they do investigate. Rats in MD might need to be concerned.

There was a Freeper on another thread stating that the alleged womanizing stories had been posted on the Baltimore Sun forum two years ago.

I analyzed a year's worth of NCPAC's posts. Indeed, by FR standards, I consider him quite mild. What I would say, and please, no offense to Mr. Steffen, is that there was a certain folksy, almost naive charm to them. He is a very real and warm person. The mistake, if any, was that he was a bit too open about who he worked for; plus, he mentioned things like attending a certain press con, or meeting or knowing a certain person and things of that nature. The MEAN, NASTY and EVIL people who have been monitoring this forum, seeking to do all they can to dull the impact of it, and to stop the GOP, were likely able to guess that NCPAC was Steffen, some time ago. Once they knew who he was, then, it became sort of an entrapment operation. For them to make it into a scandal, all they needed to do was simply to prove that "an aide of Erlich posts on Free Republic" and that furthermore, he posted on threads commenting on Maryland politics and on the O'Malley rumors. It was a case of guilt by association, with no evidence whatever of conspiracy or ill intent. But no matter, in a liberal state, where an unexpected win by the GOP of the statehouse angered the left, even what is really a relatively minor thing, an aide posting on FR and being "seen" on the rumor thread, is enough to create a bogus scandal. How malicious. I'll say this. Those who have undertaken this operation on the part of the left are truly evil people. I wonder if *they* have broken any laws?

I've got some very interesting information for the governor's investigation regarding the Maryland Democrat Party dirty trickster that setup Steffen and the Washington Post reporter er, Democrat operative that was working in concert with him. Almost hoping to receive a subpoena.

I don't see what the big deal is. Isn't this the same mayor who compared President Bush to the 9/11 terrorists?

How can this mayor remain in office after making such a statement?

Democrats won't rush into any investigation of their own hoping the scandal will go away before some evidence against the mayor surfaces.

Nice to see elected officials have so much time on their hands--and I'm not referring to the one who got fired for three or four emails.

I know, but you have to give them credit for giving this legs...they're making it out like they've got Linda Tripp all over again.

In which case, I'm wondering if there's a blue dress somewhere.

Are ego-mad Dem pols in the habit of fidelity? A NE Irish Dem pol?

The Dems are going to assume that this posture of righteousness--"the evils of gossip"--will immunize O'Malley. It just may make for even more eyes watching him...and his car license number.

CACHE VERSION: http://216.239.57.104/search?q=cache:R-gyErHfhFgJ:www.dcrtv.org/mailbag.html+baltimore+sun+mayor+O%27malley+affair+2003+reporter&hl=en

These rumors about O’Malley’s Clintonesque extra-marital affairs have been around WAY before Ehrlich was even elected. I’m not sure about the specific allegation regarding him fathering a child w/ a TV reporter, but rumors of him cheating on his wife have been around since Paris Glendening was in office. Remember him? He’s the guy who dumped his wife who he claimed was “the wind beneath my wings” (he serenaded her w/ that song at his 1st inauguration) after he knocked up one of his staffers who was 20 years younger than him. I digress. What the Ehrlich staffer did was nothing more than point out rumors that EVERYONE knew existed. Just because an Ehrlich staffer acknowledged the existence of the rumors, for O’Malley to try and blame the rumors on Ehrlich is pathetic at best. I remember in early 2002, hearing from some Democratic sources that the “powers that be” behind KKT’s campaign began unraveling some of these rumors way before the primary in an effort to thwart O’M’s run for the 2002 primary. Remember his speech in 2002 when he said he wasn’t going to run? He looked like someone ran over his dog, and refused to mention Ms. Townshend by name. The Democratic party—both in MD and nationally—was absolutely INSISTENT that KKT be the nominee and strong-armed every other Democrat out of the race, including O'Malley. You can do that when your last name is Kennedy, and your uncle Ted is one of the most powerful politicians in the country. Lot of good it did them. O’Malley would have won in 2002. I’d be willing to bet the farm that the Kennedy machine approached O’M early on and laid down the law: “If you stay in the race, we’ll leak what we know about your infidelity. If you step aside, you’ve got our full support in 2006.” But what bothers me much more than an Ehrlich staffer acknowledging rumors that everyone else in the state knew about, is Martin O’Malley’s speech yesterday when he equated the president’s budget to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. How sickening. He had a brief political victory this morning. Too bad he stuck his foot in his mouth last night. If O'M loses his next election, perhaps there’s a teaching position waiting for him at the University of Colorado. However, I’m sure the Sun will continue to trace the rumors to Ehrlich, while making no mention whatsoever of O’Malley’s pathetic and distasteful statements at the press club last night. They've been campaigning against Ehrlich since the day he announced his candidacy in '02, why stop now. (2/9/05)

O'Malley and his wife, Catherine, held a news conference Wednesday to say that rumors that the mayor has been unfaithful to his wife were untrue, with O'Malley describing them as "despicable lies."

I hope somebody is digging hard into this.

NCPAC put out a message here admitting he was Steffen.

Was this all a ruse? Was Steffen set up?

I'm (obviously) confused.

Or as I just posted, a Doug Duncan operative. Duncan and O'Malley are going to square off in teh Dimmycrap primary and the winner gets to oppose Gov. Ehrlich.

Spreading the rumor, true or not, damages O'Malley, and trying to tie the Republicans to it harms Ehrlich. Who benefits? Duncan.

Duncan is the Washington Post's favorite politician in the region.

"It happened on his watch. If he didn't know, he should have known," Miller said

Now these words need to be thrown in the face of every Demagogue who jumped on the bandwagon and supported the smear campaign and dirty tricks launched by "MD4Bush" who turns out to be a troll of the Democrats. Whoever turns out to have employed this troll "should have known" what he was up to, according to Miller's standard. Maybe they did know?? For every MD Democratic pol the question now must be "what did he know and when did he know it?"
