San Francisco -- A convicted sex offender _ chased out of four San Francisco Bay area towns _ was given court approval Thursday to move into a Contra Costa County community despite public opposition.

Cary Verse, 34, has been living in a motel room in San Jose for the past year while he's been in the outpatient phase of the state's mandated treatment program for California's most serious rapists and child molesters.

A new state law requires that sexually violent predators be sent back to the county of last residence before their incarceration; Verse was last arrested in Contra Costa County in 1992 for assaulting a man in a homeless shelter.

Anthony Ashe, a criminal defense attorney, volunteered to be Verse's landlord about three months ago, offering to house him for $1,250 a month in a cottage attached to Ashe's law office in Bay Point.

You can bet if the judge lived in this neighborhood he would make some other ruling. You won't see judges releasing these predators into their own neighborhood.

I don't like paying for life in prison for these guys and execution is improbable.

What about creating a sort of prison community: they can live freely, work and move around within the community, but serious border guards would prevent them leaving?

Just a thought.
