Reminds me of the story my mother told me when I was a little child living in Europe. Tales of white slavery were common, ancient tales of the Barbary Pirates stealing women and children were used to frighten children for several generations. She told me I should never walk over a grating in the side-walk because there might be a mussulman underneath who would kidnap me.
My spouse who was born on the island of Lipari recalls similar experience, his grandmother would warn him if he didn't behave, the Mamelukes would come and steal him away.
The unprotected coast of England was subjected to numerous slave-taking raids, estimates from folklore and church sources indicate over 1 million people were taken from coastal villages:
White Slaves, Pirate Gold.

Every lie the arabs tell is nothing but an embelishment of their documented history.
And there I was avoiding billabongs all my life in case I encountered a bunyip! ;oP
One of my favorite parts:
Occasionally the tables turned and Barbary Pirates were themselves captured. This is Berry Pomeroy Castle near Dartmouth. In the 1600s, it was the stronghold of Baronet Seymour. In May 1626 the parliamentary state papers report:"Another Sale ship has been bought into St. Ives by William Harris of Loo and other Englishmen who, having been taken by the Turks and kept as slaves, revolted, slew those on deck, and kept 32 under hatches."
The Algerian Head of State wrote to Lord Seymour protesting the mens innocence without effect. The pirates were held briefly in the Castle. A plan was made to exchange the Algerian prisoners for English slaves being held on the Barbary Coast.En route to North Africa the deal fell apart when the pirates were themselves sold as galley slaves.
Great link on the Muslim slavers who took captives from the English coast. Took men and woman back to Morocco to be slaves
