It was the Young's making extended monetary demands beyond the actual "damages" that led to the girls getting a lawyer.

If you were dropping off cookies at someones house as a surprise you would simply place the cookies, knock and leave. Not hang around long enough for someone to "call out" etc... They probably weren't there more than 20 seconds.

Use some common sense.

DB makes a very good point. It doesn't make sense to me that Mrs. Young would go to court just because the oral apology was refused. She probably went to court to get even more money than she was offered.

So, you know 100% for sure it wasn't more than 20 seconds? That would be what I would call an "opinion" or a "guess", not a fact.
