You two seem to be missing the whole point altogether. Consider that "life" was once considered special, having a kind of élan vital, supplied only by God, that separated it from non-life. These researchers are saying that life can be created from scratch using what amounts to basic chemistry -- and indeed, this may be how life arose on Earth in the first place.
