Readers ring up a happy ending for dog story

Michael Korzeniewski's cell phone rang in Cape Coral, Fla., on Wednesday evening. Too bad the call came 40 days late.

It was from the alleged dognapper, Chicago lawyer James Foley, who found Ariel the dog while on vacation in Florida, took her home to Chicago and refused to send Ariel back to her master, Korzeniewski's 7-year-old son, Miles.

Foley had stalled for more than a month, saying he couldn't give the dog back because the family couldn't prove ownership and because he'd already given it to some mystery nun Foley refused to name.

That mystery nun finally figured right from wrong because Foley was on the phone telling Korzeniewski that the dog was coming home.....

After reading about this on FR yesterday I sent the story to a well-connected friend who lives in Chicago-land. He's actually pro-plaintiffs' lawyer due to his brother being killed by a big trucking company, but this story was way too much him.

Here's the email he sent to the firm yesterday. I think he went too easy on the jerk.

Dear Mr. Farina and Mr Hoey:

Not only do I originally hail from Illinois, I am also an attorney. Thank goodness I did not go to law school with this guy. No wonder my profession gets such bad press.... it is guys like this who make the road for the ethical attorneys a difficult one. (And yes, there are a FEW ethical attorneys out there.... they are just hard to spot sometimes!) I'm hoping his firm does the right thing....

CBS has just reported that imaginary nun was responsible the Bush National Guard memos given to Dan Rather/Maples.

I asked how his son had received the news.

"He's so excited," Korzeniewski said. "This will be way past his bedtime, but we're taking him to the airport. You should see him right now. He's running around as if his pants are on fire. He wouldn't miss this."

Korzeniewski said he didn't want the readers of this column to miss it either. He wanted you to see the reunion in the photograph running on Page 1 of today's newspaper.

That's only fair, since you're the ones who called Foley's law firm--Hoey & Farina--in such numbers that you swamped the office phones and panicked the secretaries and apparently blew out the computer server with angry anti-lawyer e-mails.

HA, blew out their server, too funny. The power of the internet strikes again. Happy ending ping!

I agree, the lawyers story had no credibility. You don't take a dog from Florida to Chicago at considerable expense, unless you plan to keep it. JERK!

I don't believe this is all that unusual. An acquaintance of mine had an expensive bird that escaped from her house. She posted signs only to have a well to do builder call her and require that she pay a ransom before he would return the bird which he had found!
