SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Nestled in a quiet Sacramento neighborhood is a very loud political statement that is testing the very foundation of the right to free speech.
Hanging from a house in Land Park, a soldier's uniform in a noose dangles from a rooftop. The words "your tax dollars at work" are scrolled across the chest.
In a community full of patriotism, this view of the war in Iraq has not gone unnoticed.
"I think it's the ultimate sign of disrespect. We have troops dying for us," Land Park resident Mark Cohen said.
"(I'm) annoyed and disgusted. I think if this is the way someone feels they can find a better way to vent their opinions," Land Park resident Pete Miles said.
The homeowners behind the controversy are Steve and Virginia Pearcy. They released a statement saying, "There will always be people who are offended by political speech, and the most important forum of all ... is one's own residence. The First Amendment is meaningless unless dissent is allowed."

Did one of them earn that uniform or did they buy it at a surplus store?
Meanwhile residents across America are sued for flying the American flag.
If I were their neighbor, I'd hang effigies of Steve and Virgina from my rooftop.
To do something like that in my home town would have consequences. I honestly they have a right to do put that up and I believe the American Flag can be burned in protest. It offends the hell out of me, but I feel Freedom of Speech is absolute. But I also believe in consequences.
If you burn a flag and someone is so outraged they hit you upside the head, it should surprise no one.
Here, what would happen is that these people would be shunned. They would be the recipients of bad service at restraunts, lost laundry, late night phone calls maybe a brick or two through the window. Not that a brick through a window is good, but when your goal is to outrage people, thing happen.
EXACTLY
Where's a PITA HOA when you need one...
Apparently, the display is no longer there because it was vandalised. The station is also polling people to find out what they think of the display.
Leftists have no sense of decency. Another example of why I cannot be a liberal.
the neighbors should just hold vigils with the American flag outside his house and take turns......one lone jacka** is a pretty lone voice but it would irritating to live near.....
That might be seen as a threat. I'd hang effigies of hippies.
This is also known as begging for a Molotov cocktail. I wonder if there is an insurance angle here ?
freedom of speech lets us know where the contaminated areas are and how to avoid them.
were I a business owner in the area: no emergency calls
to fix his furnace, plumbing, or anything else.
Amazingly the left gets more irrelevant by the day
with their IRRESPONSIBLE free speech. Let them keep
making these kind of disgusting anti-military, anti-american
BS statements, and pretty soon they will all blow away like dust in the wind.
I totally agree with you except the part about assault and battery.......LOL........I'd feel like it but can't go there....most of the time you gotta ignore these bas**rds or get louder and more outspoken.....
Maybe they are talking about this 'soldier?'
Didn't think so...
If these morons don't agree with their neighbors they're perfectly free to move. I wonder if they bought the house just so they could voice their "Dissent."
If I saw such a thing I would seriously consider burning it. I won't elaborate on whether or not I'm talking about the uniform, the house, or both.......
