Daltrey said afterwards: She said I got this for my music as well as charity work but I dont think shes a rock and roll fan.
Shed probably fall off her podium if she heard The Whos songs.
A good blast of My Generation would go down quite well now.
He said his award was something to remember adding: I still have criticisms of the Establishment but the Queen is an exceptional woman. I think shes amazing.
You can criticise the Establishment but you cant criticise the Queen.
The experienced performer was racked with stage fright during the investiture.
Its nerve-racking. Thats why I prefer being in a group, he admitted.
Dressed in a black pinstriped suit and light blue tie, Daltrey, wearing frameless glasses, said: Ive only got one suit. I bought another one for this but it turned out awful.
Im not a dressing-up person. Im not that at all. Only very special occasions get me in a bloody suit, I tell you.
He was awarded his CBE for services to music, the entertainment industry and charity.
Daltrey is patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust and has raised more than £2 million for the charity by organising concerts at the Royal Albert Hall.
He added: I didnt expect to get this. None of us work alone so I accept this for those that dont get anything.
I know there are criticisms of the honours system but there would be of any honours. I am very honoured.
Daltrey, from Burwash in East Sussex, and guitarist Pete Townshend are the only surviving members of The Who.
Drummer Keith Moon died in 1978 and bassist John Entwistle died in 2002 on the eve of a US tour.
Daltrey and Townshend met at school in west London and formed a band together called The Detours.
The Who were formed in 1964 and were one of the decades biggest rock bands.
They stormed the music scene in 1965 with I Cant Explain and went on to have a string of hits, including Substitute, Im A Boy, Happy Jack, Pictures Of Lily, I Can See For Miles, Pinball Wizard and Wont Get Fooled Again.
Linked to the 1960s Mod fashion craze and Pop Art, they adopted patriotic Union Jack graphics.
Despite reaching number two in the charts with My Generation and Im A Boy, The Who never achieved a UK number one single.
But their forte was album sales and breaking box office records, as well as their stage equipment, with Townshend, like rock legend Jimi Hendrix, smashing his guitar into the amplifiers.
Renowned for their live performances, The Who found fame in the US and played both the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and Woodstock in 1969.
Townshend created the rock operas Quadrophenia and Tommy, and Daltrey took the starring role when Tommy was made into a film.
The Who split in 1983 but have embarked on several reunion tours.
Daltrey also had a solo career and has continued to act.
A new Who album, Who2, is planned and will be the bands first studio recording in 23 years.
Daltrey said: Its going very well. Once youre in there it all comes back to you. Its going to be a good album but its early days. He was giving nothing away as to when it would be released Itll be ready when its finished, he joked.
He was accompanied by wife Heather, sister Gillian and six-year-old granddaughter Lily.
Daltrey later said his award was something to remember.
He added: I still have criticisms of the Establishment but the Queen is an exceptional woman. I think shes amazing.
You can criticise the Establishment but you cant criticise the Queen.
I read in some liner notes (maybe for their box set) that Pete did regret the incident with Hoffman, and it was a "get the f**k off my stage kind of thing"
Pete's (and Roger's) views probably align more with Hoffman's than mine, but at least they didn't join any Rock Against Bush tours last year.
Actually, Roger's first solo album was self-titled and featured songs from Leo Sayer. It was very good, but I don't think I've ever seen it on CD.
The front of the sleeve had a photo of him shot from the front and the back had him from the back.
The biggest single was "Giving It All Away."
Long Live Rock!
Cheers
Jim
Live at Leeds rules. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
Very few bands have the ability to jam on stage, playing their own instruments, for an indefinite amount of time without boring the crowd.
Wow! He looks great!
I was never a Who fan but I LOVED Daltrey on the Highlander TV series. He was fantastic!
Ditto! This is the greatest knowledge resource there is. I am humbled to have been able to contribute even in so small and nit picky a way!
Cheers
Jim
Meher Baba was from India & Pete used him as some sort of "spiritual leader" and said of him; "Baba is the Avatar of the age-the messiah". However blasphemous, Pete thought highly of him and Baba did get Pete to renounce dope and to look at the "love" generation with a skeptical eye.
Pete had many portraits of Baba in his house. Baba O'Riley was actually named after Meher Baba and some obscure composer named Terry Riley.
Whether all of Baba's influence was good, I don't know. His dislike for drugs has probably kept Pete alive all these years!
That pic of Daltry is probably only the third time I have seen him in a suit, the other two times were for Keith and John's funeral.
Do yourself a favor and go buy the reissued, remastered extended version of "Live at Leeds" The entire concert
, including all of Tommy.
Have alook at the reviews

Do you have more of these good stories?!
I was just watching my Special Edition DVD set the other night! And then there's the DVD from their Boston show in 2002!
Well, last year there was some brouhaha when Michael Moore made up some story about why Townshend wouldn't let him use "Won't Get Fooled Again" in that pile of steaming dung, Fahrenheit 9/11. So, Pete came out and wrote a long explanation of what really occurred -- and admitted that he was in favor of the Iraq war, at least before the WMD crap that the left pushed.
Quadrophenia, my all time favorite.
When it came out in 72? I went thru 4 - 8 trak tapes that summer, wore them right out.
One fall day I pulled onto a beach down on Cape Cod, pulled the big speakers out of my car and listened to the whole thing watching the ocean waves crashing.
I wasn't even high..
It's on CD -- and I have it, of course. ;D
How cool!
