The problem with 'gay marriage' as a theme of the DNC, is that it won them nothing. The Mary Cheney incidents proved that both parties rejected playing that game. So while it *may* be the only issue (I don't know...) that can corral all their splintered interests to focus, most of them are one issue voters, and you better pick theirs. Evidence Hillary and abortion the other day.. MoveOn had a fit. Sooooo... what may be emerging, is the left using the Gay (and various other) activist wings with their established shills in the media and blogging machines, until they no longer need them... just like they did to JesseJackson et. al. They will NOT have a seat at the DNC table *ever*, no matter what promises are made to them. Again, using history as our guide, where have Democrats ever trusted blacks in high profile, powerful positions?? None. Interesting discussion.. Wonder how much money the left can soak from each group to stay afloat. Uncle George Soros may have to dig an inch deeper.
I look at it this way: The party that promote abortions has no limits on who they'd abort. Meaning, they'll abort their own malcontents (or out them) any bit as much as they will political opponents.
And you are quite right, Dems have NOT promoted minorities despite all the rhetoric. Therefore, yours:

is bang on target. Couple this with Hillary's: I'm going to take something (away) from you for the common good.
I agree with you -- it's a losing strategy. It's akin to cutting off your own legs.
