The trick will be to watch to see if Woodstein schedule a presser. They don't like other very much, so any joint appearance, article or announced book release would be a clue.
who cares, I mean who cares.....
I heard that most people will be "greatly disappointed" in the identity, meaning that it isn't someone of any importance.
Wouldn't that stink? After 30+ years of speculation....
Gerald Ford is also ill.
I think WoodStein said the I.D. would occur in the deceased person's obituary as opposed to a presser or a big front page story.
Whatever, it'll be interesting to see all this play out...eventually.
Gerald Ford is also ill. Could he be Deep Throat???
I think people are gonna say, "Who?"
Gee, just a couple of weeks ago, the "HOT" line on this old story was: "George H. W. Bush was deep-throat." I guess this new rumor knocks him out of the story.
To be honest I don't care at all.
Wasn't it Linda Lovelace? Is she sick?
Is Monica Lewinsky ill?
Woodhead has had along time to fix his story.
NORE: This from John Dean:
I have little doubt that one of my former Nixon White House colleagues is history's best-known anonymous source Deep Throat. But I'll be damned if I can figure out exactly which one.
We'll all know one day very soon, however. Bob Woodward, a reporter on the team that covered the Watergate story, has advised his executive editor at the Washington Post that Throat is ill. And Ben Bradlee, former executive editor of the Post and one of the few people to whom Woodward confided his source's identity, has publicly acknowledged that he has written Throat's obituary.
Without confidential sources, much of what people need to know in a democracy would never be reported, so unless there is a higher reason, journalists must be able to protect such sources who are willing to impart such information. That said, no news person should agree to provide confidentiality unless it is essential to obtain information that the public should be told and there is no other way to obtain the information. A scoop per se does not justify a pledge of confidentiality.
As for Deep Throat, well, we will all soon learn if Woodward has been protecting a criminal for three decades, or merely a source who gave him some good information and some bad information when history's greatest source was wrong that Woodward has never corrected. (To pick just one of Throat's many errors, I randomly opened "All the President's Men," scanned until I came to the passage in which Woodward reports Throat as giving him this: "Dean talked with Sen. [Howard] Baker after [the] Watergate committee [was] formed and Baker is in the bag completely, reporting back directly to the White House." It never happened.)
I suspect that Throat's identity may prove a cautionary tale for all news gatherers. Stay tuned.
Add in the "journalists" hatred of Richard Nixon and their mission to end the "illegal war." (The American press was later praised by North Vietnam Communist General Giap as his "most valuable guerrilla".)
Let's forget about that and talk about "Deep Throat".
One writer nails it, "Deep Throat has become a convenient means of journalistic self-congratulation, a way the media reminds us of its place at the center of the Watergate constellation."
Truth is, deep throat was a cheap-trick name for deep background briefings, leakers, rumors, and just plain made-up stories MSM employees hoped "would make a difference."
I'm thinking Rehnquist. Not only is he ailing and probably dieing. He is also someone who has not been suspected a trait I associate with DT. He was on the Supreme Court at that time. But he was one of the Arizona crowd. Also a friend and fellow Arizona crowd member was Kleindienst who was Attorney Gen. at the time of water gate and was convicted. They probably talked and Kleindienst probably confided with Rehnquist. i suspect that is how DT had connections with the FBI,through Kliendienst. I don't know if Kleindienst, or who, had connections with the Campaign.
Also Rehnquist had been the White house chief lawyer prior to having been appointed to the court. He could of well maintained connections to that office.
I don't know why Rehnquist would turn on Nixon (after all he appointed him to the Supreme Court.) But, Woodward said the person was motivated by conscience. That is about the best guess I can come up with. Rehnquist abstained from the Nixon case when it got to the Supreme Court. Possibly an act of conscience by someone who was more involved in the case then thought. Serving on the Supreme Court would also be a motivation by DT to keep his identity secret for the balance of his life (and his SCOTUS term). Also in only confirming the info,DT could be showing a judicial temperment in not geting to involved.
So how do we know Woodward is telling the truth? The alleged "Deep Throat" will be dead and unable to confirm or deny the assertion.
Well, it seems like the next step is pretty simple. Some savy Blogger (since we can't rely on the MSM) should start researching just who from the Nixon years is currently at death's door. Obviously, Bush 41 is not. Besides, can you really see him sneaking around a parking garage. I don't care if he was CIA, it's just not his style.
