PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, February 8 (Itar-Tass) - The Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday spewed incandescent gas and vapour to an altitude of up to three kilometres.

The trail of the emissions has stretched for 50 kilometres to the northeast of the volcano. A cloud containing volcanic ash particles moves in the direction of the town of Klyuchi (water-springs), which is situated at a distance of about 30 km from the volcano. Yuri Demyanchuk, a staff member of the Klyuchi-based volcano monitoring station, has told Itar-Tass by telephone.

Klyuchevskoy, if I read that properly, would be a locksmith's son.

Well, I don't speak Russian (wish I had taken it for my foreign language requirement) but I've seen the volcano referred too by both Klyuchevskaya and Klyuchevskoy.

Klyuchevskaya is the feminine version of the same word.

If the emitted volcanic gas contains excessive CO2, will it be charged against Russia's Kyoto quota, since they are now a participant in that treaty?

Yep, all forms of flatulence are covered by the Kyoto treaty

Maybe we should ask Al Gore. After all, he is the #1 expert on global warming. (Mostly because of all the hot air he spews.)

I think the global warming-volcano jokes stopped being funny or interesting about 300 volcano threads ago.

And it's not valid, anyway; on balance the Sulfur Dioxide that volcanos emit cools the earth more than any CO2 they emit causes warming.

"Klyuch" could mean either (1) a key (like lock and key, or encryption key) or [unconnected] (2) a water spring. Spelling and declensions are identical, with the meaning to be derived from context. The name of the volcanic mountain is most probably derived from the meaning (2), for there would be thermal springs in the vicinity. There are derivatives from (1) like 'zaklyuchennyi' -[prisoner, inmate, someone under the lock and key], "klychar' (m), klyuchnitsa (f)" [steward, someone who keeps the things under the lock and key]. For 'locksmith' "slesar'" is used, which is a transliteration of German "Schlosser".

Klyuch means key or spring. Kluchevoi (adj) means key or spring.

Locksmith is slesar'

I think it probably refers to how a volcano bubbles up--like a spring of water bubbles up. You know, like Old Faithful.

Well, everyone who knows Russian knows that root because eveyone knows how to say "prisoner" zaklyuchenii (behind the key) in Russian.

Surely you are not suggesting that I am joking!?

No, I am concerned about the social justice aspect of this crisis. It's not fair that the USA has only 4 1/2% of the world population, yet consumes 25% of it's natural resources. In other words, America has become rich by stealing from the world's poor.

And now, as eloquently stated by an esteemed United Nations representative, it is time that we pay back the poor for our sins.

Now the Rich Must Adjust
